Who’s been to Idstein? Is there any local transportation to or from the Bahnhof? We’re staying a couple of nights . Our hotel says it is an 18 minute walk from the train station. Doable, but at this point I’m unsure of our baggage situation. Are there any taxis ? Haven’t checked with the hotel yet to see if they have anything. Just wondering.
What is the name of your hotel? I do see bus service in the town.

There are buses next to the train station. Not sure which ones go into the town center, but email your hotel and ask them. They will know. Yes, it is a bit of a walk from the station into the city center and I wouldn't want to do it with lots of luggage. The buses are listed on www.rmv.de but I would need the street name for your hotel.
I have been here dozens of times, so if you have any questions about Idstein, ask away. It is one of my favorite towns to visit from Frankfurt.
We are planning on staying at the Hotel Hoerhof on Obergasse
Looks like you about a 5 minute walk from the Idstein Busbahnhof where buses from the train station arrive. Use the rmv site Ms Jo gave you and use Idstein Busbahnhof as your destination and it will show the connection times from your arriving train. You can also type in the hotel address, Obergasse 26, Idstein and it will show bus times, nearest stop and walking time.
There is a very brief description of Idstein in my Trip Report, under the Fachwerkestrasse subheading. I agree that it's an ideal place to sleep without a car, because it is relatively large. I can't speak to spending multiple days there, because we made a part-day visit with a car. Lots of restaurant choices.
Sam, the buses stop literally, right next to the train station. I think when they say 5 min. they are including the walk from the train to the buses.
That's what I meant, "buses FROM the train station TO the busbahnhof". Hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the busbahnhof. RMV says get off at Hochschule, before the busbahnhof. A tad closer.
aha. Thanks! Must be time for bed for me. :-)
