IDP Validity Date

Hello all,

I will be renting a car in Germany this summer. I have already made/paid for the reservation and obtained an IDP from AAA. I just noticed that the front of the permit says, "Valid for one year from: 5/20/23." The issue is my rental starts 5/17. If possible, I want to avoid having to change the booking. Will this difference of a few days prevent me from being able to pick up the car? Thanks for all replies.

Edit: I spoke with the rental agency and it looks like I only need an IDP to pick up the car if my official license isn't in German or English. I appreciate all the info and input provided!

It could. I find it odd AAA would "post-Date" the IDP, usually the expiration is one year from the day of issue.

While you could just plead ignorant and try, many rental agencies just verify you have it, or not, and focus on your drivers license. It may be more of an issue if you are stopped by police, in those three days.

But you have time, why not go back and have them issue one with the correct dates?

I agree perhaps AAA put wrong month by mistake? Seems.funny they start date next month. Go.back to.them and see what can be done. I would prefed.to.have the date.match car pick up.date. and not have to worry.

Thank you for your steadfast replies. I made the mistake of getting the IDP back in January, assuming it would be valid from that day till end of 2023. Unexpectedly, the agent at AAA asked for my departure date, which I hadn't worked out at the time, so I just said "May." I completely forgot about this when booking the vehicle last weekend. I'm trying to avoid driving back to AAA, waiting in line and paying another $20 fee given it's only a 3 day difference. Although, it's better than the potential headache of not being able to pick up my rental I suppose.

It could , there is no way to predict this with certainty. My attitude is that what is printed on a legal or otherwise official document is the deciding factor in determining the document's validity .Why not go back to AAA and have it rectified ? Personally I would be uncomfortable using a car for four days without a valid permit , the rental agency's position in honoring the rental date , notwithstandingEDIT - Sorry for the double post about this , I agree with Paul

Just tell the AAA agent, they put the wrong effective date on it. It shouldn’t cost you any additional money. It seem it could simply change the date and put the AAA stamp on it.
