💡 Itinerary help: March family trip with teens, 14 & 15 -Munich based

We are spending 9 days in Germany -flying in and out of Munich with our 14 & 15 year old teens. My husband & I have visited Munich & surrounding areas twice in last 7 years but our trips were in September. What we loved and definitely want to do with kids are Zugspitze, Neuchschwanstein, Salzburg, Berchtesgaden Salt Mines, Garmich- Partenkimchen ...it is so hard to select highlights and make sense of a doable itinerary.

Currently-we have hotel reservations in Munich for duration but would like to plan 1 to 2 overnights elsewhere to make best use of our time.

Interests and questions:
* think I would like to visit Rothenburg. And also do the Night Watchman tour...so wondering how best to schedule this with trip. Also...rent a car? Stay overnight here?

Trying to determine whether to stay overnight here, GP or Fussen and combine some of the sites.

I guess mainly--looking for insight and itinierary suggestions. We plan to primarily use trains for transport. Having never visited in March ...am hoping we will find new and interesting experiences.

Thanks in advance!

We are planning something similar but for June. We had been going back & forth about spending a night or two in Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Füssen as well. We ultimately decided to do day trips to each. The Bayern Pass makes it very economical and both logistically seem reasonable to do on 2 separate days. Another reason behind our decision was the flexibility around weather to see the Zugspitze. Since its June we plan to get tickets ahead of time for Neuschwanstein but then we can head to Garmisch when the weather is predicted to be it's best. We have many things on our to do list for Salzburg and decided to spend 3 nights there.
Good luck with your planning!

We took our 3 kids on a similar trip last summer (but started/ended in Frankfurt). We rented a car on expedia and it was so worth it!! $342 rental cost for 12 days (plus a $20 ticket I received for not having a toll sticker in Austria). It enabled us to explore the countryside/small villages on our own timeframe with no hassle. We spent 2 nights in Rothenberg--Night Watchmen's tour was a huge hit--then headed down Romantic Road and spent several days in Fussen area. Loved Oberammergau! We then headed to Austria, and Salzburg was another huge hit!! The only time we did not appreciate having the car was when visiting Vienna (where we just let it sit in the hotel parking lot and took the underground). We visitied Ludwig's castles, walked up to entry/explored area but opted out of the "interior tours" due to the overwhelming crowds and Disneyland-like feel. But we loved exploring the trails around the castles and from what w've heard, didn't miss much by not doing the tours. We got our castle fixes by the Hofburg palaces in Austria (another very popular visit with our teen/kids). Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip.
