Ideas in Munich to Walk off Jetlag

I'm looking for outdoor suggestions for a couple of hours after I arrive in Munich. My hubby likes to take a nap after arriving overseas, and I do much better if I can walk outdoors (no indoor museums, etc. the 1st day) before meeting him for dinner. We'll be staying near the Marienplatz, arriving on a Saturday afternoon. Since I will be jetlagged, ideas where I don't need to make a lot of transportation decisions would be preferred.

My initial thought was to walk the Nymphenburg Palace gardens but would appreciate your ideas.

Nymphenburg's a little far from Marienplatz, unless you hop on a bus. The Englischer Garten is much closer.

You could just walk the route of the self-guided walking tour of central Munich in Rick's Germany guidebook. It might take a couple of hours and orient you to sights where you will want to spend more time later in your visit.

That said, when I arrived at Marienplatz on the S8 from the airport on a sunny August afternoon last year, this is what I did: I first walked to my hotel (Pension Lindner, across the street from the synagogue and the City Museum) and dropped off my bag. I then walked to the Asamkirche just down Sendlingerstraße, then continued to Sendlinger Tor. I took the U-Bahn (U3) to Olympia-Zentrum and wandered through BMW Welt (free), then over the pedestrian bridge to Olympic Tower for a breathtaking view of the city and the Alps in the distance. By then a return trip on the U3 got me back to Viktualienmarkt in time for dinner.

The next morning I set out on the self-guided walk, despite the rain.

I second the Englischer Garten as well. This is was our go to place to fight jet-lag when we had visitor to our home on Munich. If the weather is no cooperating I would suggest the Ricks self guided walking tour of the city center. If the rain is coming down hard at least you can sneak into a church or two.

I'd also suggest the Englisher Garten. You would walk through a little of the old centre to get there but not enough that your husband would miss out on anything. The park is huge, so you could walk as little or as much as you like, sit and people watch when you need a break or grab a snack if you feel peckish.

Nymphenburg Palace would also be beautiful but would require a little transportation logistical decision making on your part. It's not hard to get to from Marienplatz, though, so certainly a good option for you.

On my arrival day in Munich, I took a walking tour in the afternoon, which worked well. Rick's book lists several companies (I honestly don't remember the one I used). Look at their websites to see what interests you (I do remember I did a Third Reich walk).

Thanks, everyone, for your ideas!

LOVE your photos, Jeff, including the final one of the carpet at the Portland airport. We lived in Tualatin for 10 years in the 80's,

Jeff,

Great photos! What kind of camera gear are you using?

Thanks, Ken. That was a Canon S120, and I also used the still function of a GoPro Hero 2 for the ultra-wide-angle shots.

I just arrived in Rome yesterday and the S120 suddenly had a big dust spot on the sensor in the middle of the frame. Fortunately I brought a Samsung WB150F as a backup.
