We might want to stay in Mainz for an afternoon and one night on our way from Frankfurt to Trier. Any suggestions for hotels?

There are a handfull of hotels right across the Bahnhofsplatz from the main station in Mainz. I've stayed at two of them; this is my favorite.

Stayed at the Schottenhof, across the street from the Koenigshof. also nice with a good breakfast.

We have stayed at the Königshof as well. Be sure to ask for a quiet room in the back. The hotel faces a drop off point for the main train station. Plus there was a bar/coffee cafe next door. The street noise was considerable.
Good breakfast and decent rooms at the hotel.

When I was at Königshof in 2008, they had an entire table in the breakfast area with American breakfast items (real bacon, scrambled eggs, waffles (I think), but it was my last morning in Germany. In a day I could get all the "American" food I wanted; this was my last day for a German breakfast, so I passed.
I had a room facing the Hauptbahnhof; my room was quiet, but, as I recall, it was mid-week.
