We will be driving from the Bad Windsheim area of Germany to Vienna with two young children. As this drive will take roughly five hours, we are looking for something to do mid-way to give them a break from the car. We're thinking maybe something in the Passau area would be best as this is roughly half-way along the drive. We would be interested in short walk/hikes, playground areas/parks, small and pretty towns to explore or something else along these lines. Basically, a place where little kids can safely run and play a bit. We don't want to go into larger towns or cities as we will waste time trying to park. We don't mind going slightly off the direct route to Vienna but not too far out of the way, please.
Passau is a beautiful town on a long peninsula having the river Inn from one side and the Danube from the other. At the tip of the peninsula at the confluence of both rivers there is a nice park.
The tip of the peninsula where the Inn and Danube rivers join in Passau has a nice little playground. The town doesn't take too long to visit, however. Veste Oberhaus provides a good view of the city, but the interior isn't that interesting.
