Ideas for an open week in Bavaria

Normally I'm the one giving the advice here but I thought I'd try the wisdom of the masses this time!

I tentatively have plans for Tegernsee on Sept 18th and then in Munich on Oct 2-3 (Oktoberfest trip with my brother). I already have my hotel for Munich booked but that is it. I meet up with my brother in Frankfurt Sept 27th and travel with him back to Munich via a few nights in Franconia.

That gives me Sept 18-26 open. Right now my tentative plan is to get a holiday rental in Mittenwald and spend that week doing day hikes (maybe a night in a hut or two) but I'd be open to other suggestions for off the beaten path activities. I used to live in Munich so I'm familiar with all the standard tourist activities.

TIA

We were going to spend a couple of weeks on a different lake near Munich, Ammersee, in 2020 but of course weren’t able to do it. We liked the lake, ferry, bier, hiking and biking possibilities. But as you may know my favorite lake with few English speaking tourists is the eastern side of Bodensee. Technically it touches Bavaria in Lindau, the only town where we ran into American tourists. We loved Meersburg and Überlingen as far as lake, ferry and hiking possibilities. You can hike in Austria and Switzerland in a matter of an hour or so. There are great cultural and historic sites around in the various towns from gardens, abbeys, zeppelin museums, prehistoric water villages, etc. don’t miss the hops region of Tettnang. We know of a couple of villages where dozens of storks nest on roofs if that interests you. Sorry to be so stuck in a region but I could always spend another week or two in a town on the eastern side of this beautiful lake with views of the Alps in the distance.

Thanks for the responses. Südtirol was also on my list of possibilities (chance for better weather) but I'll look into Osttirol.

I have a friend in Oberpfalz that I was going to visit for a day as well (probably on my way back from Frankfurt with my brother).
