ICE Train from Prague to Cheb to Nurnberg to Luxembourg

Hi travelers,

According to the Man in Seat 61 (train guide), there is a route from Prague to Cheb > Cheb to Nurnberg > Nurnberg by German regional train and > Nuremberg to Koblenz by German ICE train to Luxembourg, starting at 60 Euros pp in 1st class.

OK, so I went to int.bahn.de and entered in these details. Nothing came up except for the Nurmerg to Koblez ICE train, and that started at 140 euros pp. Should I contact a distant cousin in Germany to hook us up or do something else? I’d like to think I can do this on my own…. Any sugestions?

You can put in Prague to Luxembourg and specify a stopover in Cheb and see it, but not for 61 EUR in 1st class. Right now, it looks like Cheb to Nuremberg requires a transfer at Pegnitz to a replacement bus. It is a 13 hour journey, over all.

Oh, good idea!

Just went to OMIO (Is this a good site? — they seem to be more user-friendly than DB).
So, plugged in that info on Omio and there’s an early Ceske Drahy train @ 6:31AM with 2 xfers that arrives in Koblenz @ 4:10pm, giving ample time to xfer to a 5:06pm DB 5122 that arrives Luxembourg @ 7:23pm for $43/pp. Great idea!! And a time saver too!
(We care most about an eventual scenic route (Koblenz region) and not Cheb or Nurnberg.)

Depending on your travel date, this route involves not two but 3 (Dresden/Mainz/Koblenz) or 4 (Dresden/Frankfurt/Mannheim/Koblenz) transfers: the first option has a transfer time of just five minutes in Mainz, while the second has a transfer time of less than 15 minutes in Frankfurt and only 10 minutes in Mannheim. The chances that your trip will be derailed at one of these points are very high. Of course, you can easily take a later train if that happens. I would plan alternatives in advance (the best way to do this is in fact on the DB website).

The Omio price is based on the Czech Railways Early Bird Europe fare (non-refundable, non-transferable) from Prague as far as the Germany-Luxembourg border station Igel; trains within Luxembourg are always free. You can book this ticket directly through Czech Railways (www.cd.cz, remember: from Prague to Igel, since the CD has no saver fare from Czechia to Luxembourg). On Jun 17, e.g., the tickets costs 950 CZK = €39 instead of €45 on Omio.

Looks like there’s actually more options than there were yesterday, if that’s even possible!

I like the idea of so I went to the Czech railway link and it’s all in Czechoslovakian. How does that get translated to English? Didn’t see a way to do that on the site.

Fritz, can you send a snapshot of what you’re talking about? What I’m looking at says there’s two transfer points , each with about 10 minutes or so of time to transfer.
If you can’t send a snapshot, can you tell me what website you’re looking at? Thanks!

www.cd.cz/en That is in English. Or click on the flag icon at the top of the page to the Union Jack (EN).

I don't think the RS forum allows snapshots. But this link shows you everything that is on offer for June 17 for connections via Koblenz and the Mosel Valley (your preference; there are shorter connections via Saarbrücken; the last segment from s. into Luxembourg is by bus):

https://int.bahn.de/en/buchung/fahrplan/suche#sts=true&so=PRAG&zo=Luxemburg%20Bahnhof&kl=2&r=13:16:KLASSENLOS:1&soid=A%3D1%40O%3DPRAG%40X%3D14451481%40Y%3D50081926%40U%3D80%40L%3D5496001%40p%3D1776103857%40i%3DU%C3%97005496001%40&zoid=A%3D1%40O%3DLuxemburg%20Bahnhof%40X%3D6134392%40Y%3D49599717%40U%3D80%40L%3D8200100%40p%3D1776103857%40i%3DU%C3%97008200100%40&sot=ST&zot=ST&soei=5496001&zoei=8200100&hd=2026-06-17T06:00:56&hza=D&hz=%5B%5B%22A%3D1%40O%3DKoblenz%20Hbf%40X%3D7588343%40Y%3D50350928%40U%3D80%40L%3D8000206%40p%3D1776103857%40i%3DU%C3%97008019023%40%22%2C%22Koblenz%20Hbf%22%2C0%5D%5D&ar=false&s=true&d=false&vm=00,01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09&fm=false&bp=false&dlt=false&dltv=false

The number of transfers (at least three) is indicated to the right of the scheduled travel time; click on “details” to see the transfer time available at the respective transfer points. Repeat this search using your actual travel dates, and don't forget to select Koblenz as a stopover. For the actual booking go www.cd.cz or to Omio (if you're willing to pay the small fee).

Now, let’s limit ourselves to the two most practical connections:

(1) Prague departing at 6:31 via Dresden – Mainz – Koblenz. It has a problematic 5-minute transfer in Mainz, but by clicking on “increase transfer time”, you can extend it to half an hour and still arrive in Luxembourg at the same time (by reducing the connection time in Koblenz).

(2) Prague dep. at 7:35 a.m. via Schwandorf (where you’ll get off the train to Munich) – Nuremberg – Koblenz. The layover in Schwandorf is quite long (1 hour and 5 minutes), but you could use the time to grab lunch at one of the bakeries around the station (there are three or four of them).

Alternatively, you could take the 6:45 a.m. Flixbus to Nuremberg (arr. 10:35 a.m.) and continue your journey by train from there at 11:32 a.m. That way, you’d arrive at your destination 90 minutes earlier.

Please let us know your exact travel dates so we can provide you with more detailed information (and I’m also curious to know where you managed to find a connection with only two transfers).
