How would you spend ONE day in the Bavarian Alps?

I'm planning to visit Germany in May 2020. Right now, I've planned four nights in Munich, including a day trip to Neuschwanstein. Here's the thing: what I care about most is seeing the Bavarian Alps. I'd love to see Ludwig's castles, too, but from what I've heard on this forum, it's not necessarily worth it...

So: how would you spend one day in the Bavarian Alps? Some have suggested a trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, or Oberstdorf. I especially like these ideas because of the hiking opportunities—including the Partnachklamm, Leutaschklamm, and Gaisalpseen, respectively.

I'd really apreciate any thoughts or suggestions you have! And I'm happy to take the earliest train from Munich to maximize my time in the Alps.

I would go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and hike the Hoellentallerklamm, a hike I prefer to the PartnachKlamm.

You can continue past the end of the gorge another 15-20 minutes to a hut below the Zugspitze with great views (shown in one of the photos). And for a longer hike, continue past there to end up at the top of the Alpspitze cablecar, and ride down.

Thank you! Can you tell me how long the entire hike would be, if I ended up doing the longer version (with the cable car)?

Day Trip to Mittenwald

Though the opening hours, prices, and other small specifics in the linked guide are dated, the essential information should still serve you well.

If you end up with free time at the end of your day, see if you can fit in a Bavarian Evening meal at the Fraundorfer Inn in G-P, where your train stops anyway.

With only one day, I would plan a couple of different options depending on the weather. The all would involved taking a cable car up a mountain, hiking to a hut for lunch, hiking around a bit more than head back down.

Some that I would suggest that are very close to Munich in addition to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Mittenwald (Oberstdorf, while beautiful, is a bit far for a day trip that includes hiking in the mountains):

I would love to go with my Caravan with Ford f150 truck, which i use for queens towing services that is very powerful truck that can le I go anywhere, wherever I want to go.

It has been a few years (almost 20) but I believe it was under 6 hours. My son (who was studying in Germany at the time) did not arrive to me me in G-P until after 11, and we had to stop at a bakery to get him some Sonnenblumenbrot before heading out to Hammersbach (I think by train) to start the hike. We went through the gorge and on to the Hoellentalanger Huette for a lunch break, and then made our way to the top of the Alpspitze cable car at Osterfelderkopf. There was a beautiful spot along the way called, I think, Rinderscharte. We had to hustle a bit to be sure we did not miss the last cablecar down, I think at 5:30.

You could ask at the TI to clarify the details. I looked online but can only find the hike described in the opposite direction, which takes you through the Hollentalklamm at the end. They walk uses the Kreuzek lift to ascend to the starting point (a bit lower than Osterfelderkopf), and then you head to the Hollentalanger Hutte before descending the gorge. It is described as one of the best in the area in this NYT article:

https://www.nytimes.com/1994/09/04/travel/hiking-the-bavarian-way.html

Scroll down to the paragraph that begin’s “The Alpspitze’s most rewarding hike. . . “ That paragraph and the next cover it; they say it takes 4-5 hours. That agrees with the hike description in my “Around the Zugspitze” walking guide.

Max,
Last year my husband and I were looking for a good hike in the Garmisch area. I found an old post of Lola's that was about the hike she mentioned above. DO IT! It is a great hike. My journal shows we were on the trail at 12:20 (We had to pick up a rental car and drive down that morning from Munich) It took us about an hour to reach the entrance of Hollentalklamm. Going through the gorge is beautiful and gives this hike a unique experience. We hiked onto the hut from there. Because of our late start, we didn't stop to eat (however, we hiked back up to the hut to eat the next day...it's that great). We pressed on. You actually have 2 options. You can go up to the Alpspistze and ride down or you can hike over to Kreuzeckhaus and ride a lift down. (The lifts are side by side when you get down.) Because the Alpspitze is higher, it had a cloud sitting in the top. So we stayed lower (which had great views) and went to the other hut and rode down. My journal shows we arrived at that hut about 4:20. So it was about 4 hours of continuous hiking. (We are 63, avid hikers and used to elevation gains, so some people may do it slower than us and some faster than us.) The Hollentallenger hutte was about 1/2 way.

We stayed in the little town of Grainau. It is our favorite town in this area. All the hotels give you a Grainau pass that allows you to ride to the train and buses for free. If it is a day trip, and you plan to go back to Munich, there is a pay parking lot right at the base of the start. When you reach the bottom of the lift, you have about a 7/10 of a mile walk back to the parking lot. If you take the train down, you can ride the smaller train over the base of the lifts and walk over to the start of the hike. It starts in the Hammersbach area. The trail to Hammersbach is not obvious, but you just start making your way that direction and it works. The day we were there, many people were walking between the two.

I highly recommend this hike. Let me know if you need more info. We did get the brochure on Hollentalklamm at the visitor's center Here are some web sites about the hike (and you can do it going the other direction where you ride up and hike down. I prefer hiking up as coming down is hard on the knees)

This one describes the hike to the higher up hutte. We saw the small trail it describes. From the Schwarzekopf, you can make your way down to the Alpenspitze. (haven't done it myself though)

This one describes the other route:

And a video (done the opposite direction we did and going to Alspitze) It does give you an idea of the incredible scenery. At the end, you can see how she is walking along the train tracks back to the bottom of the lift.

I hope this all helps. I spent a lot of time researching hikes for our trip last September, and this one lived up to expectations.

Connie, Thank you for your excellent description and the links. I could not find much on that hike, and my memory is incomplete. This is a great help to the OP!
