How to spend 5 hours at Frankfurt Airport OUTSIDE security

My wife, 2-year-old daughter, and I will be traveling to Germany from the U.S. in late September to visit friends and do some sightseeing. On the day we arrive, our friends will be driving home to Kusel from Munich (Oktoberfest) and have offered to pick us up at Frankfurt airport. The problem is that we will land at FRA at about 11 am, but our friends don't expect to get there before 4 pm, so we have 5 hours to kill. At first I thought it would be no problem to spend 5 hours at the airport, given what I read about all the amenities FRA has for travelers (yoga rooms, quiet rooms, children's play areas, restaurants). But then I realized that most of these are beyond the security checkpoint ("airside") for outbound travelers. I'm assuming that after we land we will be required to pick up our checked baggage and proceed straight through customs, after which we will be outside of security ("landside") and unable to access most of the amenities FRA has to offer. At that point we will be jetlagged, laden with baggage and a (probably) cranky toddler, so "just going into Frankfurt for a few hours" isn't really an appealing option (even if we stored our bags at FRA, which is pricey). We'd really rather stay put, relax, and occupy our daughter for a few hours before our friends arrive.

So the question is, Can we pick up our checked bags but stay airside for a few hours after we land? If not, is there much of anything to do at FRA outside of security? Thanks for any advice!

That sounds brutal.
I would check into an airport hotel and take a nap. Then have your friends pick you up there. Easier for you and easier for them.

If you had only carry-on, would that solve your problem?

When I flew into Frankfurt about three weeks ago (arriving at terminal 2 from the U.S.A.) we were channeled to passport control then onward to either connecting flights or baggage pickup. I could have explored the secure terminal area. However, once I reached the baggage area and customs exit area I did not see any airside options. Afterwards, I was able to roam terminals 1 & 2 easily (non secure areas).

We will absolutely, positively have checked bags. It sounds like we could get through passport control and stay airside, but our checked bags would be sitting on the carousel at baggage claim and we wouldn't want to leave them there too long. But once we go to pick up our bags, we'll be landside. So it seems like a day stay hotel near the airport might be our best option. Thanks for your replies!

Had you explored getting a day pass at a lounge?

Consider taking a train to someplace like Heidelberg or Mannheim. Your friend is driving at least 4 or 5 hours from Munich. The detour to Frankfurt adds almost another 2 hours to his trip. You both can arrive in Kusel almost two hours sooner by eliminating his detour.

I checked out the LuxxLounge, which seems to be the only public landside lounge at FRA, but it's €30/adult/3 hrs, and there's not a whole lot to do there. It's pretty much just snacks and comfy chairs - no way to sleep and not enough entertainment for a 2-year-old. I feel like at that price we might as well pay a little more for a day stay hotel near the airport and try to nap for a few hours.

I'll look into taking the train south and meeting up with our friends en route from Munich. It would be rough with our bags and a toddler in tow, but it might be worth it if it gets us all to Kusel sooner. Thanks for your replies!
