How to get from Munich Airport to Bamberg

My friend and I are arriving on June 1, early morning from Boston. It seems like the best way to go would be to go to the Central Train Station and take a train from there. Is that correct? How often do the trains run, what is the cost, do we need to buy tickets ahead of time, what is the length of time needed to get there? Can you pay with credit cards or do you need euros? Any other helpful hints not thought of would be appreciated. This is our first trip to Germany and are excited.

You can go with fast trains in a bit less than 3 hours, walk-up price is 142 EUR for 2. If you want to book now, leaving several hours as a cushion in case fights is delayed, it is 59.80 for 2. These tickets would become worthless if an extended delay meant you missed your assigned train from Munich Hbf (aka Central Station).

If you don't mind taking your time, you can travel on regional trains with a Bayern Ticket costing 31 EUR for 2. These have to begin after 9 am, which should not be a problem arriving from N.A. It takes about 3 3/4 hours. With a Bayern Ticket, you can ride any regional train or bus in Bavaria from 9 am to 3 am the next day. Hop-on, hop-off if you want, stop for a few hours along the way if you feel like it. It also includes local transit, like U-Bahns in Munich or Nuremberg, trams, etc. Buy out of a vending machine at the airport or pay an extra 2 EUR to buy at a ticket window. Credit cards accepted, or EUR cash.

Train schedule and prices are at www.bahn.com. If you want to use the Bayern Ticket, click on the box "Local transport only" under "change other data" page. That will show itineraries with eligible trains. A few routes start with a bus from the airport to the nearby town of Freising, by passing Munich Hbf. Otherwise, take the first available S-Bahn to Munich Hbf. They go every 10 minutes.

I do not know what your schedule is like. Bamberg is a bit of a train ride after an Atlantic Flight. I would be tempted to stay in Freising and catch the train to Bamberg the next morning. Freising claims the oldest, active brewery in the world:

Freising is a great small town with good restaurants and hotels. We really like the Gasthaus Weissbier Huber for a German meal.

We also like a stay at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof.

If it is on the direct Lufthansa flight from Boston, its only a 7 hour flight. A mere bag of shells, as Ralph Kramden used to say.
