we are going on RS germany,austria,and switzerland tour. flying into Frankfurt .. is there a train directly at frankfurt airport that goes to cologne or do we have to take the "airport train" to the main train station and then take train to cologne?

Yes, this is a very easy route. Head to the long-distance station in the airport. Many high speed options per day. Most journeys take under an hour.

There are 2 direct trains every hour taking 55 to 70 minutes. There also direct trains at 58 past the odd hours that take over 2 hours but travel the scenic route along the Rhine River.

When using the DB Navigator app, the Frankfurt airport will be called Frankfurt Flughafen or Flughafen Fernbf. This is the station right in the airport.
Frankfurt Hbf is the main station in the city center, about 20 minutes away.
