How safe is it in Munich at night.

I understand that any city can be unsafe at night, my question is: My husband, myself and two teenage daughters do not want to just go back to our hotel and veg once the sun goes down. Any suggestions? We are staying very close to the city center. Thanks for the suggestions.

It is not unsafe at all! Where would you even get that idea? Not sure where you are from, but cities in Germany are safe at night as well as in the day time. No roving gangs of thugs, no shootings, no stick-ups.

If you are here in the summer, it is light out until almost 23:00. The cafes and restaurants all have outdoor/sidewalk seating, so the city is full of people sitting outside, enjoying the evening. Join them.

I've never had any concerns about safety in Munich or walking back to the hotel late in the evening, even though the hotel I often use is in a bit of an "unsavoury" part of town close to the station. The downtown area is usually quite lively in the evenings with lots of people in the streets and some excellent street entertainers.

I stayed in a hotel a few steps from the Marienplatz and I walked back to the hotel from the metro late in the evening by myself. Never felt unsafe at all. There were always people around that area late into the night, most of them probably tourists like myself so you won't be on the streets alone.

I felt safer than in any big American city. Actually much safer.

Right, of course any city can be unsafe at any time of day but we’ve been to Munich several times, twice during Oktoberfest but not for the celebration, and have never felt unsafe. In Munich you can very safely go out in the evening to have dinner and walk around long after dark. In general, relax, relax, relax and enjoy every minute!

I have never had any problems whatsoever in Munich, real or perceived, day or night.

I lived in Augsburg for four years, back in 87-91. Germany was very safe then. I have German friends that live in the USA and they tell me that things have changed somewhat due to the influx of refugees.

She said that she was afraid to go out at night in some areas of Augsburg and Munich.

The main thing that makes German streets safe at night is that people go out on foot to eat and seek entertainment. No place is 100 percent safe but crowds of everyday folks definitely help. I did see two guys wearing brown shirts and black boots that gave me pause in Nürnberg but that was at about 10 AM. It has been just a few years since we were in Munich but we never felt unsafe there.

I've never felt unsafe in any area of central Munich walking around up until 1am. It's pretty common to still see a lot of people out until about 11am and get quiet after that. The only "sketchy" incidents I recall are going to the airport at 4am and seeing a passed out drunk with a pretty substantial head wound on a night tram but this is common for night public transport in any city.

Which hotel did you end up staying at? That could help people give more specific pointers.

Any concerns you have about feeling safe in Munich day or night are groundless. No problems at all.

I stay in the train station area and getting to/from the Zentrum, ie Marienplatz, I always walk, perfectly normal and safe. If tons of people do likewise, so can I.

Some areas for sure, but why would you go to those areas anyway?

Exactly. I live in a relatively safe small city (<60k) and there are places I wouldn't walk alone at night. I felt safer walking alone at night in the main areas of Munich, Paris, Berlin, etc. than I do at home.

I've been visiting Munich twice a year for the past 7 years typically in December or March during lower tourist season.
I'm a 5'-0, 108 lb. senior female who travels solo. I stay at the Hotel am Vikualienmarkt near Marienplatz and walk everywhere very late at night - from LMU (the University) to Theresienwiese, to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station), to the Deutsches Museum, through the wooden English Garden... I've always felt safe, even when there's no pedestrian traffic. As you should anywhere, just stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Mostly, so you stay clear of the bike paths and don't get hit by a biker!

mom2co3,
Congratulations on your upcoming trip to Munich!
I'm going to pile on with the others. We were just there in July with our teenage and preteen daughters and we didn't feel unsafe at all, night or day. You are good to go! Your family will love Munich.

If you notice, this question was asked in April, 5 months ago. It was just reawakened.

Since mom2co3 has two teenage daughters it is likely that they have completed their trip and the girls are back in school.
