looking at booking trains how many hours is good to spend in Salzburg for a day trip from Munich? want to be able to see castle and old town but don't want to get back to be sitting around killing time waiting to get train but also don't want to feel rushed I'm thinking roughly 8-9 hours between arrival and departure
I've been to Salzburg twice and loved it both times. IMO, I think you'll certainly not be sitting around because there is plenty to do and see! Have you watched the RS episodes on this city ? Read his articles/books on Salzburg ? It's a marvelous town and entirely charming! In fact, we loved it so much in 2024, we booked 3 extra nights there in 2025 and still didn't tire of it.

If you are travelling on a Bayern ticket, using the regional trains it doesn't matter, since you can take any regional train after 0930 weekdays or any time weekends. Take an afternoon train or a late evening train, it doesn't matter as long as it's a regional.
I would say eight to nine hours is about right. That should afford enough time to see the castle and town. If you like classical music history, you'll also be able to see the Mozart Geburtshaus (birth house), another house the family lived in and the church where young Wolfgang first performed. I am reading a biography, Mozart in Vienna 1781-1791 by German scholar Volkmar von Braunbehrens. It's a 490-page work intended for a general audience, not music scholars, and highly readable in its English translation. It might enrich your visit.
