How many days in Munich? 10-day trip to Munich/Bavaria/Salzburg

I'm planning a 10 day trip to Munich/Bavaria/Salzburg in August and would like your opinion on how many days to spend in Munich.

This trip would be my 2nd leg of the 30 day trip. I'll be flying into Munich from Lisbon. It'll be my first time in Munich. Right now, not knowing much, I'm considering spending 2 days in Munich before heading out to Salzburg.

Would really like your input on the following -

  • 2/3 days enough in Munich?
  • I assume public transit would suffice in Munich
  • Which area to stay for convenience
  • How is Munich in August assuming it's a big vacation month for Europe

Please advise, thanks much!

For Munich, I would suggest a minimum of 3 days. There is a lot to do there. It is also a very walkable city and has easy public transit (ubahn /subway system simple to navigate). For convenience, I would try to stay near the Marienplatz or Viktualmarkt areas. Very central and nice areas, if you want to be close to major sites. Some people like to stay near the train station, but it's a bit seedy for my taste even though safe.

It will be warm in August. Try and get a hotel with a/c.

I've spent a few weeks, total time, in Munich in the last 15 years. It's the only large city in Germany I can stand. I would say to spend your first day in the center of Munich, Marienplatz, Frauenkirche, Kaufstrasse (pedestrian shopping street), Hofbräuhaus (or another Bier Hof), spend another day in the Deutsches Museum, and another half day at Schloß Nymphenenburg. Others would say to go to the art museums (Pinokotheke) or to Dachau Memorial. That would add a few days. Check these all out and decide for yourself how many days to stay in Munich.

Public transportation in Munich is outstanding. Almost everything, except for Dachau, is in the inner zone of Munich. An all day pass for unlimited travel in the inner zone is 12,20€ for up to five people.

For my first six or seven trips to Munich, I stayed in a very German hotel in the outskirts, 20 minutes by S-Bahn from Marienplatz. They closed, so the last trip I stayed in a hotel in the Altstadt. I was still 20 minutes walking from Marienplatz.

For month I've stayed in Bavaria, in hotels without A/C. For only two nights did I feel I needed it. You'll pay for A/C a lot more nights than you use it.
