We are taking the Best of Germany tour Sept 2019 and it starts in Hamburg. We will be coming from Bergen as we are taking the Best of Scandinavia tour first. We have 8 days between tours (we plan to spend 2 extra nights in Bergen) so will have 5 nights in Hamburg. Is that too many?? I have read Rick's information about Hamburg and it looks like there would be a couple of days we could spend, but we are not sure if there would be someplace outside of Hamburg to visit for a day trip or two.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We want to start looking at airline tickets and this is the last decision for us. Thanks!

I went to Lubeck from there on a day trip. And old town Bremen is worth a look

Depends on your interests. Hamburg is a large city, which offers enough for a week - but probably not for everyone. I could probably spend a whole day in Miniature Wonderland alone :) Besides Lübeck, Schwerin and Lüneburg are also within easy daytrip distance.

You will need a little break after Bergen and all that.
I suggest two options for 5 days.
1. Spend few days in Hamburg (2-3 in city and day trips to Lübeck, Bremen or Helgoland island).
2. Take scenic train to Oslo, spend a day there, night ferry to Copenhagen, 1-2 days there, bus / train to Hamburg. Take connection with ferry Rodby - Puttgarden which is very nice.
Also suggest to look at Hamburg Tourism website.

thanks everyone! I like the idea of going out of the city of Hamburg and seeing some other cities. Or we may just sit for a little bit. :)

Hamburg is the cultural center of North Germany. I suggest at least 3 nights min, 4 if possible, which means on the 3rd day you have the option of doing a day trip to Lüneburg, Schwerin, Kiel, (not just the city but the Kieler Förde harbor cruise), Lübeck, or Bremen, ie a number of choices within 1.5 hr radius from Hamburg Hbf.
Hamburg is also the rail hub for North Germany

My husband and I took that tour last September. We loved Hamburg! Such a beautiful, vibrant city. If you are lucky, you will get Sabina for the local guide walking tour. She's great! We had one extra day in Hamburg, we would have liked to have more. If you're into walking, there's a beautiful lake with a walking trail around near the hotel. Have a great time!
