How long does customs take when arriving in Germany? Other DB questions.

When we arrive in Germany, we need to take a train from Frankfurt to Nuremberg (long story, but that's where we land). I want to make the reservation. We land at 12:10pm. How long should I allow to go though customs and get to the train station so I know what time to book the train? I don't want to wait around too long, but I don't want to make things hectic either. Thanks!

Also, someone in another heard mentioned that trains sell out. Is that common for the regional trains? I am traveling with my mom who can have bad days due to health issues. So I am trying to keep plans flexible but we were going to take trains from Nuremberg to other places. Do we need to book ahead of time? I was just thinking of getting the Bayern ticket each day we travel on the day of travel.

The passport control process can move along fairly quickly at Frankfurt airport, or not depending on the number of flights arriving at the same time as yours - the customs process can get bogged down if you're waiting at the baggage carousel for your bags. Then it's great signage and a walk to the connected train station. I have no estimate of the time needed.

A check on the DB website, shows all trains from Frankfurt Airport to Nuremberg to be ICEs and they run frequently.

Buy the ticket when you get there. Customs is nothing. You are actually asking about immigration. That is little dependent on the number of planes arriving at the same. We have found immigration can take 30 minutes and maybe two hours -- it depends. Once took over three hours on a Saturday morning in Rome but the Germans are general more efficient than the Italians. Regionals don't sell out because they have open seating. No seat available you stand till one opens up. Trains are very flexible. You will be fine waiting.

Thanks!

When I read where someone else said the trains sold out, I panicked. I don't want to be stuck at the Frankfurt train station for hours waiting for a train to Nuremberg. But not knowing how long things take make it hard to pick a time to reserve seats.

We have traveled all over Europe for the past 20+ years, mostly by train, and have never found a sold out train. It can happen but it is rare and in all probability there will be another train along in another hour that will have space.

"have never found a sold out train"

Agreed, but 1st Class could be sold out on any given train, if that was your desired mode of travel.

Post covid, our last two international flights were significantly delayed, so had we bought train tickets in advance, the money would have be lost.
Download the DB Navigator app to buy the tickets- set up an account. We had problems at the machines at the train station, which wouldn't take our credit cards without pin #. The app worked perfectly!
Safe travels!

Thanks again!

I don't care what class we get really. I don't see much difference unless one is going to use a lot of Wifi. My only concern is space for my mom's wheelchair on the train. But it folds up if need be and shouldn't be any different than a bike or luggage on a train.

I have the app already. I just set it up an account.

Fewer than half of my flights to Europe have been on time - from a couple of hours to over a day. If you can get a cheap fare - mine was only about 30 euros, then a gamble isn’t out of line. I’d allow 3 hours

Do you really want to travel on local trains from FRA to Nürnberg? That will
be time consuming (3:45 vs. ca 2:25 with ICE) and involve at least two
transfers.

You could check with your airline whether they sell DB's Rail&Fly ticket (not
available from DB itself), which is the best compromise between flexibility
and cost.

I am taking ICE to Nuremberg. I am taking regional trains from Nuremberg to other places (to other towns and such in Bavaria). Sorry if I wasn't clear. I will look into the airline thing. I am flying United.
