How early to book timed tickets for Historic Green Vault in Dresden?

I am considering a visit to the city at some point this year. I just looked on the website and there are still plenty of tickets available for this afternoon and for other days this week, but it's probably a quiet time now. Are there times of year where it's necessary to book significantly in advance?

I checked some dates, weekend and week day in other months. I looked around the Easter weekend, July and August. There seem to be plenty of tickets available from the 65 per hour that are allotted per day. That said, I have personally gotten out my credit card and booked admission tickets to other venues in Europe for 48 people at one time, wiping out a lot of tickets.

While I think you'll be ok to wait, you might also look at a late afternoon booking if you find sold out periods. School groups and tour bus groups don't usually book in late afternoons. Also there is a combo Green Vault and Residence ticket that has some good value so if you are wanting to visit both, you'd need to book earlier in the day to enjoy both venues. The other combo tickets on the website don't include the Green Vault.

I can only speak from my limited personal experience. I visited during the afternoon on a February weekend. I bought walk-up tickets and only had to wait about 15 minutes until my entry time. I would not presume to comment on how typical my experience was.

We had the same experience as @Tom, when we visited during late August 2015, except that for some reason, the person in the ticket booth sold us tickets for the NEW Green Vault. When we realized that we needed tickets for the HISTORIC Green Vault, we went back to the ticket booth and exchanged them. It was no big deal, but make sure which Green Vault you buy tickets for.
