I realize Oktoberfest runs from late September into October. I also realize many people come to Munich to celebrate it. We fly out of the airport in Munich to go home from our trip to Germany on October 3rd. I wonder if the biergarten would so crowded around 4:00 p.m. that we wouldn't have any chance of getting in? Has anyone had this experience before?

According to their website, they take reservations. I don't know if that's an option during Oktoberfest, though.

I've never seen reserved seats in the Augstiner beer garden, at least not in the self service area. You can, however, reserve seats online in the restaurant and on the terrace. On weekdays in the afternoon, the beer garden is normally not crowded. Please note: Oct. 3 ist national holiday. With dry and mild weather (uncommon in October) the Augustiner will be full.

It's worth a shot. If it's full you have a couple options. You can jump on Tram 17, which runs right out front and zip up to Hirschgarten, which holds 7k people. Although not a beer garden, the Augustiner Braustuben is a short walk away. Both serve excellent food and Augustiner beer.
