How can i get the best value from Flixbus when travelling to other cities from Frankfurt

I have never used Flixbus myself, but based on mostly positive feedback and cheapest rates, i have decided to take the flixbus for my eurotrip next week. I will be using it a lot and i have been keeping a good eye on the rates. The rates seems to be fluctuating but i could not figure out a pattern. What i am looking for are cheapest rates possible for overnight journeys. You see, i am on an extremely tight budget and looking for further cost cuttings.
I will be staying in Frankfurt (23rd sept - 30 oct) and only taking buses on weekends, mostly overnight buses. So here are the questions:

  • Overall, how to get the best deal out of Flixbus ?
  • The website or the app ? I think the answer is clear here, the app is the cheapest, but maybe someone can tell me more about this.
  • How early should i book ? Do rates fluctuate a lot ? Last few hours booking would be better or worse ?
  • The most important one - I was surprised today with a special offer on app only - many of the tickets are for 9.99 Euro only. Offer valid till 15 sept. What is this ? Any extra conditions apply that i should know before booking so early ? How often these schemes come in ?

Flixbus charges more to the digitally illiterate. At times even the cheapest train tickets were available through websites that compared bus rates.

Otherwise it's like an auction. The longer you wait to book the cheaper the rate, but the higher the risk all seats are gone. There is a lot of daily, weekly and seasonal variation, from (weekend) commuters, vacationers. Be aware of school vacation and public holidays. You will never know whether you achieved a good price unless you observe rates yourself over longer periods of time.

Some of the ticket prices seem very attractive with both bus lines in question. I guess drawbacks are efficiency of service, and limitations of areas they go to. Also, if there is a transfer involved the overall length of the trip seems to get really long. But, if you are going on a direct line, no transfer involved, could be a good alternative possibility to trains.
