How can i get the best value for DeutscheBahn tickets when travelling to other cities from Frankfurt

When i was in Frankfurt some time back, i was planning a budget weekend trip to European countries and for this i was trying to get a best deal for ICE trains out of deutschebahn. Out of all the typical options for best deals, there is one particular thing i noticed:

The ticket machines at central train station were listing reduced fare for high speed trains to neighboring countries (paris, amsterdam, spain etc) for the same day for as log as 28 euros.

I never got a chance to buy it but it was pretty surprising to see such a discount on tickets which otherwise cost 129-139 euros. The only reason i was not taking ICE trains was because of its high price but if i can score this reduced fare...

So my questions:

Best way of getting the lowest fares on high speed connections (overnight and for solo traveller)
Any other charges associated after buying these tickets ?
The whole process (never been on ICE trains)

I think it is actually 92 days in advance, but the Bahn website will tell you when you can purchase the tickets. If you put in a date too far in advance it will tell you "Ticket sale from xx/xx/xxxx possible". I don't know if all tickets for that date go on sale at midnight (CET) or if it's 24 hour periods, but you'll find out.

I'm pretty sure that, even from a ticket machine, you must buy the ticket as least 1 day (24 hours) in advance to get the discount price.

Be aware that if you referred to overnight sleeper trains, these will soon become completely extinct (if they haven't already). When the Bahn website offers you an "overnight connection" nowadays, it mostly means that you sit in a train station during the wee hours of the night between the latest arrival and earliest departure.

@ contact....If your trip is before the end of this year, the sleeper trains are still operating. Next year with the sleeper trains gone, there is still is night service, just no couchette or sleeper. You can still choose the night train option on a ICE and IC . I did it twice in May/June. You sit in the general seating area, Grossraumwagen.
