hotels to stay in frankfurt?

We will be taking the GAS tour at the end of September and are planning to get to FRA 2 days before we have to be in Trier. Where should we stay and what should we see?

I thought the hotels at the airport were ridiculously overpriced and the hotels in Frankfurt by the Hbf were a little pricey and/or in run-down neighborhoods, so I stay in Mainz, near the Hbf. The S-Bahn to the airport leaves from the station. Although there are several hotels (Hammer, Schottenhof) right across the Bahnhofsplatz from the station, I have found Hotel Königshof to be a good place.

Here are my suggestions for hotels in Frankfurt. There is a lot to see here historically and many museums for varied interests. If you tell us what you are interested in, we can give you better suggestions.
Hamburger Hof, Hotel Nizza, Hotel Monopol, Victoria Hotel, Concorde Hotel, The Pure, Adina Apts, Holiday Inn Express Hauptbahnhof.
There is a Harvest Festival in the city center from 21-23 Sept. On 30 Sept. many of the museums are free, like the Judengasse Museum, Archeology Museum, Historical Museum, Architecture Museum, and Museum of Modern Art.
Farmers Markets are held in a couple of downtown locations on Thur. Fri. & Sat. or in neighborhoods like Höchst, Bornheim, Sachsenhausen, or Bockenheim on Tues. Wed. or Sat.
What to see in Frankfurt - Kaiserdom, Alte Nikolai, Book Burning Memorial, Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Wall, Eschenheimer Turm, Alte Oper, Teutonic Order of Knights Church, Karmeliter Cloister, Klein Markt Halle, are some examples.

We need to stay in a hotel near the FRA HBF just 1 night. I would LOVE a good RS recommendation but don't want to buy the whole book just for the one night In Germany, with a new version coming our in a few months! Any suggestions?

A Ms. Jo recommendation is the way to go! She knows them well.

Rick and film crew have stayed at Hotel Concorde if that is helpful to you. His editors may stay in other hotels, like Hotel Victoria.

@ambergayle -- your public library may well have a copy of Rick Steves' Germany to look for Frankfurt hotel suggestions. We stayed at Manhattan near Hauptbahnhof several years ago, although it looks like prices went up once the renovation was completed.

I travel to Frankfurt four times a year on business. I really enjoy staying at the Fleming hotels (there are 4-5 of them). The best one (for me) being by the Eschenheimer Tor - I believe it's called Flemings "City". Very close to central shopping and the Dom and alt stadt. Plus the u bahn stops right underneath it! It's only a few stops from the Hbf hopefully you can navigate the U bahn system (although very simple). I think Rick even had his crew shoot some shots from the upstairs bar area. Also, the brunch is worth it! Also, make sure you get a room in the "new" section of the hotel. It's quieter and the rooms are bigger. Plus the shower isn't the center piece of the room :) Rates are fairly reasonable - depending on timing of course. Also, make sure you check out the unique alternative elevator system in the main lobby.
