Hotels in Regensburg

We will be in Regensburg at the end of a Viking River Cruise and would like to spend a few days there. Does anyone have a favorite hotel that you would recommend? Also should we book a tour of the city or can we do it on our own?

I always go with searches on Booking.com to find hotels with high reviews. (Booking only sends a link to add a review after you stay there, so there’s no fake reviews like TripAdvisor, etc.)

I found this beauty for Regensburg when I am there for the Christmas Markets: Hotel Orphée - Großes Haus. It’s received a 9.0 rating with 834 reviews.

Extra note: I especially like the decor and layout of one of the rooms, so I requested that one, if possible, through the notes/message space on Booking’s reservation, along with a nice note about visiting their city. They replied that they will give me that specific room.

Thank you, Jean. I usually do the same, but I check on Expedia. I will check out the hotel you recommend.

We have stayed at the Hotel Weidenhof multiple times. They are moderately priced with good size rooms, a great staff and located about 3 blocks from train station. We have reserved at Booking.Com and directly with the hotel.

Once we had to pay a small "Die Bahn" fee at local bank when we needed to be enroute to our next stop. The owner offer to take the money and the chit to the bank for us on her way to work.

My favorite hotel closed, but I like Regensburg because it's an easy town to walk and see. If you have any interest there's a Golfing Museum most folks are surprised to find. Check and see if there's a fest on the island while you're docked there. Fish is the local specialty.

I had a really nice experience with Hotel Münchner Hof in Regensburg, and I'm glad to see it's still well reviewed on Google.

I would also suggest looking at the Sorat Insel Hotel, which is across the river from the Viking dock. it would be a 16 minute walk. It would offer a great view, but at a cost of having to walk a bit more during your trip.

As for tours, it's easy enough and small enough to explore on your own. The Valhalla monument is a little ways outside of town, and is accessible by bus. It has a nice view.

I didn't personally have this experience, but friends of mine stayed close to the main train station last summer and complained a little about hearing street sounds at night. But they enjoyed the city greatly.

DW also has a video available on Youtube about Regensburg and what to see there. Thanks.

Thanks to all of you who posted. I now think that we don't need any tours since it's a small enough town to get around without a guide...perhaps just Rick's book. We have booked a place to stay and we are excited about this part of the trip. Your comments are much appreciated.

I second the Hotel Orphée. They have rooms from the attic with shared bath to large suites. There are larger budget hotels at the outskirts of town. Bus travel is relatively easy. Our last overnight there we visited the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte Museum. I recommend the Brauereigaststätte Kneitinger for Regenburg feel. The Hacker-Pschorr Wirtshaus Regensburg too. Unter den Linden in the Stadtpark in summer. Don't miss the Kollegiatstift unserer Lieben Frau zur alten Kapelle.
