Hotels In Munich for Octoberfest

We are going to Munich via train from Innsbruck in early October. Plan on about 2 days. Is it at all practical to stay at the airport and take the train into town for sightseeing? Many hotels in town are booked and the airport area seems a little more available.
Overall plan-Atl to Vienna, train to Innsbruck, rent car, go to Salzburg for 3 nights then to Fussen for 3 nights and back to Innsbruck for 4 nights then on to Munich. Fly from Munich back to Atl. Thanks in advance.

Nothing wrong with that, except you are missing out on all the fun of staying at the Pension Locarno with bathrooms down the hall and tons of the over-served Aussies.
But I don't understand your schedule. Would it not be better to take the train to Salzburg, rent the car there, then go to Fuessen, then to Innsbruck, drop the car there and take a train to Munich. Salzburg is between Vienna and Innsbruck so it sounds like you would be doing a big double-back.
From the airport, you can get a multiday MVV ticket to get you to the Wiesen and back everyday.

Are you aware of the dates of Octoberfest for 2016? It begins Sat., Sept 17th until Mon., Oct. 3rd 2016.

Expect that prices for hotels in Munich to be jacked up since it is Oktoberfest or simply not available, even with the hostels. In that case, I suggest staying in another town, such as Augsburg, generally off the American tourist radar, for small hotels/Pensionen and the HI hostel. Augsburg is conveniently close by to Munich.

Yes it is practical to stay at the airport and make day trips into town but there are probably cheaper and definitely nicer locations outside Munich that are just as convenient as stay at the airport.

A quick search will pull up several alternative to stating outside Munich.

Hi, Oktoberfest is great but finding a good accomodation is always a mess... Have you thought about the Stoke Travel campsite? They organize a really cool camping area with pre-erected tents and funny stuff like night party, unlimited beer and a really cool atmosphere! Check their website here: http://stoketravel.com/trips/oktoberfest/

Landsberg am Lech is about the same distance 45-60 minutes by train from Munich. I stayed in Landsberg, at Augsburger Hof, on the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest of 2007 and they had not raised their rates. It's the lowest priced and highest rated (TripAdvisor) hotel in Landsberg, but not listed on any booking website. Go to their website and find their email address under Impressum. Write to them. They speak English.

I'm not sure that places near the airport will not have raised their rates for Oktoberfest. You might have a better chance of finding something reasonable in Freising, 20 minutes from the airport by bus, with an S-Bahn link to downtown. Here is the list of hotels, etc, in English, from the town website. Zur Gred has been recommended on this website; I would also check out Bayerischer Hof. Both are within walking distance of the S-Bahnhof.

Thanks to all who responded. It is interesting that our dates in Munich actually end after Octoberfest but the hotel rates are still high. A lot to consider. Great comments and suggestions

Thanks. Is it worth rearranging our schedule to go to Octoberfest? Can we find it in smaller towns such as Fussen?
Thanks again

What is "it". An Oktoberfest?

I've been in Füssen during Oktoberfest, and I didn't see any "fest" there. But I did see an awful lot of tourists in Füssen on the last weekend of Oktoberfest.

Sorry. Yes I meant Octoberfest activities in smaller towns. We will also be going to Fussen.

Regarding Pension Locarno mentioned above, the rooms for singles (EZ) with the shower and the WC to be found down the hall are located on the 4th floor.

Oktoberfest is only in Munich. There may be other fall festivals in smaller towns. You'll have to check the town websites to be sure, but most Bavarian towns don't schedule their festivals at the same time as Oktoberfest for obvious reasons.
