Hotels in Munich before River cruise

Our family and I will be arriving in Munich on June 27th morning from the US. We are taking a Danube River cruise from Vilshofen on June 28th. We are hoping to explore Munich and see Residenz if time allows on the 27th. Would love some hotel recommendations!

I don't have a suggestion to offer for staying in Munich - haven't visited there in many years - but I have an alternative suggestion for you.

Staying in Munich will require a 40-50-minute train ride to the main station (plus more transport if you stay in some other neighborhood.) Then you will have a 2-hr train ride to Vilshofen on June 28.

Staying closer to MUC airport will save you some time. MUC Airport > Vilshofen, without the detour into Munich, takes only 2 hours; the routing is as follows:

MUC > Freising (10 minutes) + change trains in Freising + Freising > Vilshofen (1.5 hours.)

There are two desirable options for overnight - Freising and Landshut. Landshut is a stop on the railway between Freising and Vilshofen, just 25 minutes from Freising. Besides shortening your train trips, both Freising and Landshut are nice smaller towns with a variety of accommodations, places that will be easier to get around in than Munich. On the 28th, you will find direct, hourly train departures from both towns to Vilshofen.

We stayed at the Hoel Lux two years ago and absolutely loved it. Very central location, spacious and nice room, and the manager cooks breakfast for you. She was a real gem! The hotel does not have a lift though, but the huge spiral staircase is beautiful so you sort of don't notice, lol. There are benches at each floor if you need to rest. The hotel has a great restaurant for dinner, and feels like more of a cocktail bar. It is hard to describe, but had a lot of character, in a good way.

Another place I have stayed three times is Hotel Am Viktualientmarkt. Again, a great location, spacious rooms but very generic. The staff has always been very helpful there, and they do have a lift.

If it were I, I would stay in Freising that night. It's only a half hour farther than Landshut, not much extra time in the morning, so why make it into two train segments. You'll be jet-lagged, so don't make it harder by going 40 minutes into downtown Munich.

Stay in Freising and maybe go up to the Weihenstephan monastery/brewery. Have dinner in the Biergarten under the Linden trees. Then, in the morning, go on to Vilshofen. Either that or go on to Vilshofen for the night and be near the dock the next day.

In Freising, I would recommend Bayerischer Hof. Personally, I've never stayed there, but it looks nice and it's near the train station for the next morning. (I've stayed twice in Kleine Gästhaus, it's cheaper, but I think you might need to be fluent in German to stay there.)

In Vilshofen, I stayed in Pension Sagerer, and I would recommend it. They are more oriented toward cyclists doing the bike path to Vienna, but it was nice, inexpensive, and comfortable.
