My family of four (kids - age 16 and 12) will be heading to Germany next February. I am looking to see if anyone has some recommendations on where to stay in both Dresden and Munich. We would like to be within walking distance of town centers if possible. Thanks!
In Dresden, we like the Gewandhaus and in Munich we like the Hotel Lux. Neither of these have quad rooms, so you would need. two rooms, but honestly with kids those ages, I would beak 2 rooms anyway. More space, and the bathroom issue. Another hotel in Munich that does have quad rooms and we have stayed there as well is the Hotel am Viktualientmarkt. All of these are very central to the heart of where you want to be. Gewundhaus is one that my husband stayed at every month prior to covid, and then I tagged along with him (right as covid first hit). Loved this hotel, everything about it! In Munich, we went to the Lux a year ago December with 3 ladies. The room was great and every spacious for 3 of us, but the bar in the evening was so good, and breakfast there in the morning is really good. The manager just asks what you want and she will make it, and it is served family style, so like if you want scrambled eggs you get a huge bowl of that. With teenage kids, this will save you a ton of money! LOL! The lux is about 1-2 blocks from Hoffbrauhaus. The Viktualienmarkt is pretty sterile, but the staff are so friendly and kind, and they do have a breakfast buffet. This hotel is one block from the market. We also stayed there as a family in 2017 so have had the larger rooms and they are good. Very spacious, which is nice at the end of a trip when you are trying to pack extra things you bought etc. We never had any issues with noise at any of these and would happily stay at them again.
Meininger Group has family and group oriented hotels.
Yes, Mark, I was going to say that I stayed at Meininger in Dresden and really enjoyed it. It functions like a hostel, but has a hotel look and feel to some extent, and you can get a room with two twin beds and two bunk beds. Very good breakfast for extra charge of course, but you can really eat a lot of breakfast. It's steps from the train station and walkable to the other attractions. Probably it would be a great value for your family.
Munich’s Hotel Platzl was the best! Very large family room with comfortable pull out couch bed (I was skeptical but it was good and huge). right by the old town area.
As a local I don't stay in hotels in Dresden, but some American friends of mine recommended the Gewandhaus also. However, there is a big construction site in front of it right now (and will still be next February) which is not so nice. Also, it is one of the most expensive hotels in Dresden. As an alternative: Other friends were happy with Aparthotel an der Frauenkirche. https://www.aparthotels-frauenkirche.de/
Very convenient right in the heart of the old town, apartments with 2 bedrooms available.
Thank you for your suggestions! With so many choices out there, it can be hard to narrow things down.
