Hotel suggestions for Rothenburg

Going to visit in a few weeks. Looking for recommendations for place to stay inside the walls.

We have stayed at the Hotel Reichs Kuchenmeister three times and it was satisfactory. The breakfast is good and they have a fair restaurant. We now stay at a B&B owned by Karin Weiss. She is within a short walk to the city wall and has a good breakfast and free beer at half the price.
Thanks - Bill

I really like Hotel Cafe Uhl. It is in a good spot inside the wall, but right on the edge. The rooms in the back have nice views over the fields outside of the wall. My room was a decent size and clean. It is over a bakery, and has a nice breakfast. The owner was also very nice.

We stayed here in Sept 2013.

We stayed for 3 days and used the hotel as a base to do day trips in the area.

The room was very comfortable, free parking provided. There are no elevators but nice wide staircases for carrying bags up to your room.

We had breakfast and one dinner in the hotel and all were great.

Good reviews on Trip Adviser from other travellers.

We've stayed at the Hotel Eisenhut (pricey but AWESOME), Hotel Reichskuechenmeister, and Hotel Klosterstueble. All were wonderful and right in the heart of the town square.

We are looking for a place as well, is there a benefit to staying within the walls?

Kathi. Rothenburg is small. Haus Karin is only 10 minutes from the town center; so, there was no great disadvantage to staying there, outside the wall. Still, there are plenty of price worthy places to stay within the wall, especially in the low season. I would not be overly concerned either way.

The Hotel Eisenhut is almost across the street from the city hall, about as central as you can get. It is an older hotel, like almost all are within the walls, but nice. Rates probably vary depending on date. I paid about $118 total per night last spring.

It might be more appropriate to ask if there is any place one wouldn't recommend. Every place I have ever stayed in in Germany has been fine. I stayed at Raidel in 2002, Despite Rick's comparison of it to the Munsters, I enjoyed my stay. His wizened mother sat at a table next to the door in the morning and made sure everyone left their key after checking out (OK with me since I have taken the key with me two times and had to mail it back). One little quirck that didn't spoil the stay. Rothenburg is on the edge of Schwaben, and the Schwäbisch are frugal, like the Scots. The first morning we had Würste (sliced sausage) with our Brötchen, but there were no eggs. The second morning Lorry announce that "today is egg day", and we had soft boiled eggs, but no meat.

@Kathi, yes staying within the walls and walking around the old streets at night is a whole different experience than a daytime visit.

The last two times we have stayed at the Altfraenkishe Weinstube which is in Risk's book. The rooms are really neat and the price is quite fair. The second choice would be the Uhl which is quite nice but does not have the old time atmosphere. We have gotten in the habit of making a trip to Rothenburg official by having a slice of raspberry torte at the Cage Uhl. Staying inside the walls is my recommendation because once the day trippers are gone, the whole atmosphere gets quiet and it's like a trip back in time. Whatever you do, don't miss the Night Watchman's tour, it's a great way to learn the history of the town as well as how goo the good old days were(not).

Lee, the Raidel now serves meat (lunch meat) everyday and eggs to order. My wife likes to order them. Sadly, no mother in sight. My brother and his wife accompanied us in the spring, and the Raidel was the highlight of the trip for them.

We stayed at Pension Elke this last summer. We found the location ideal. It is in a quiet spot inside the walls, yet a gorgeous view of a clock tower right from our bedroom window- beautiful! The room was very clean, very comfortable, it is run by family - all very nice helpful people. Breakfast was fabulous! And, it was quiet inexpensive. I would highly recommend it.

When will be "in a few weeks"? We were looking at Rothenberg for January and it seemed that things were closed up.

We've stayed at the Altfraenkishe Weinstube and really enjoyed it. Will be staying at the Raidel in December because I just like trying new places:) I personally prefer staying within the walls. I do think you get a slightly different experience.

Oddly enough Rick seems to ignore Karin Weiss's B&B. She is a sweetheart, the rooms are fantastic and the bathroom was out of a bath design magazine. Breakfast was great with good conversation with Karin and other guests. I have stayed inside the walls in the past, but after discovering Karin's, that is the only place my wife will allow me to book.
I recommend her most highly.

I second Pension Elke. Great location just steps from the center of town, wonderful buffet breakfast and lovely owners.

Thanks for the recommendations. Of course when I went to make reservations no one had a room. Changed our dates by one day and finally found a place . Will post later if it was a good choice

Hi Liz-
you didn't state the dates of your stay, how much you could afford, do you need parking, do you need an elevator, non- smoking, breakfast included, how close to the center, ensuite bath, TV, Wi-Fi, minibar, number of adults and children, connecting rooms, number of nights, etc. I just checked Booking.com and they appear to have many double rooms available in December ranging from $70 to $300 per night in Rothenburg depending on the factors listed above. And you can find the official Rothenburg website or Tripadvisor website using Google. These list additional Rothenburg hotels & B&B's not found on the Booking.com website.

Hope you find something that you are satisfied with so that you can enjoy your visit to Rothenburg.

We just stayed at the Hotel Kloster Stuble which is located inside the wall. It has a perfect location, being just a few minutes walk to the Market Square. It was a lovely hotel with a restaurant on the ground floor. The room was spotless and served our needs perfectly. It was not large but had just enough room for the four of us (2 adults and 2 kids).
Parking is available on the street just outside the hotel.
Make sure you take the Night Watchmans Tour!

In Rothenburg now. Staying at Gasthous Rothenburg. It's a nice place. The owner Gunnar has been very helpful. It's in a quiet spot, not to far from the market. It is 79.euros a night for a room with two beds. It seems very new. Breakfast was good. The Christmas market is very nice. Very crowded yesterday, less crowded today.
