Is anyone having any luck making reservations for summer of 2022 in Rhine area?
It's probably too early. They most likely haven't established their summer rates yet.
What towns are you looking at? There should not be a huge rush for rooms there. You can likely book 6-8 months from now with no troubles.
I‘m planning on reserving my favorite place this week. It might be too early but I have reserved this far in advance before
I sent emails to two hotels in Bacharach, but have not heard back. I need rooms for 4 couples!
I would consider booking 10 minutes north of Bacharach in St. Goar, where certain hotels (like Hotel Rheinfels and Rheinhotel St. Goar), which are both adjacent and close in AND enjoy a superb view of the river.
St. Goar is home to Rheinfels Castle and also serves as a good base if you plan to cruise the River. A Bingen > St. Goar cruise covers the best segment of the river - and if you are staying there, you are "home" when you step off the boat. The two hotels mentioned above are steps from the KD cruise boat dock (as you see in the photos.)
The same cruise with a Bacharach base is slightly more complicated. Besides this and the lack of view rooms, I would say Bacharach is a slightly less appealing base town on other grounds as well (no ferry crossing, train noise problems, distance between developed part of town and the river.)
Bacharach should definitely be seen - there are some lovely half-timbered buildings there. You could in fact spend a couple of hours there by breaking up your Bingen > St. Goar cruise for 2-3 hours. But it's a very easy side trip from St. Goar as well.
The Rhein shuts down pretty tight in the "off season". At this time tourist-stays in hotels are forbidden through June, and who knows afterwards. The hotels are probably unstaffed until the coronavirus is tamed and hotel stays are again officially allowed. They may answer your requests after they reopen.
Germany has gone from 8% (30 April) to 18% of it population fully vaccinated in May. That is a big improvement but still a long ways to go.
Honestly, I would not be trying to make reservations 1 year ahead of time, especially right now. Wait until the hotels open for tourists again before even trying. Most of them are still shut, not only on the Rhein, but in the cities too. No tourist overnights allowed in Germany yet.
Even in normal years, I have found that it is next to impossible to reserve European hotels for an approaching year, even in October for March. I read somewhere that it’s because hotel rates would not have been set, the turn of the year being management’s assessment point. The only reason to attempt to do so would be if there were going to be some really major event scheduled, like the Olympics or the Cannes Film Festival.
I guess since I don‘t book hotels I have better luck reserving apartments and very small b&b‘s
