Hotel in Munich (with children) and a day trip question

We are going to be in Munich end of June. We have kids ages 7-9. It's a 6 night stay, plan to see Munich and take few day trips (Salzburg, Neuschwastein castle, and maybe to either Ulm or Mittenwald). Wondering where to stay. As of now have booked Vi Vadi Bauer 89. Staying near the central station sounds better so we can hop on the train for our day trips. But it seems there are these not-so-good areas for kids around the central station. Would you recommend or not recommend any areas? Any particular hotel? Mostly we are not renting a car.

And while I am at this forum, I would like to ask if it's better to go to Ulm/Augsburg or Mittenwald/Innsbruck. We love the cute scenic Europe villages and towns.

The Eden Hotel Wolff is directly across from the main RR station in Munich.
I have stayed there many times and find the area to be quite pleasant and safe on both the streets--front and back--of the station.
I have seen children in the hotel and the restaurant with no problems.

We always stay near the Viktualienmarkt or the Marienplatz neither of which is at the main train station. I don't like the station area, and MUCH prefer the pedestrian areas of the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz. Try the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt for decently priced rooms and even an apartment on the top floor.
