Hotel base in Munich or change hotels

We plan to arrive in Munich Aug 8 and stay 1 night to tour the city and recover from jet lag. We plan to leave Aug 9 to visit Dachau and drive to Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area for 2 nights then on to Garmisch for 2 nights. Should we continue with the plan and change hotels, or is it better to stay in Munich and make day trips? There is a festival in Salzburg, so many hotels are booked and have higher rates.

We need to be in Stuttgart on Aug 13, but we can travel from Munich that morning. I'm trying to be cost effective with some flexibiity, but I don't want to waste too much time on travel.

You can do one or two day trips, but driving all days out of Munich does not make sense - Munich to Salzburg is 90 minutes driving if there are no queues, and queues are very frequent in August.

If you do not find a suitable place in Salzburg, try the nearby villages like Eugendorf, Wals, Siezenheim. If you have a car, they are much better value for money than the city center.

Driving in most German cities is surprisingly easy... Munich is the big exception, though. If your hotel doesn't offer parking, forget about finding any. Plus, the whole road network around the city is currently undergoing an update, so it's even worse than normal. Finally, you can almost guarantee Stau after Stau on the A8 Autobahn between Munich and Salzburg. At least when traffic inevitably snarls to a halt and you're crawling along at barely 5 km/hr, the scenery is amazing.

So Tom - you are saying to stay in Salzburg area instead of commuting due to traffic, etc? That's what I thought was best but wanted confirmation.
Thanks to all for the info!
