Hotel am Viktualienmarkt

We are staying at the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt the first week in July. I have read many good things about this hotel and the location looks great. There is no A/C at this property and I read the average temperature in July is 16C / 64F. Some other threads I have read said A/C was a must this time a year. Is that really so? My children and I not heat sensitive but my husband is.

If that “average” temperature is the average of highs and lows for July, it is meaningless. What you want to see is the average HIGH for July. 64 does not sound right for that.

We stayed at Hotel am Viktualienmarkt two yeas ago in late September and did not miss AC at all. It was September, not July, but still quite warm. Of course July could be anything from cool and rainy to sweltering. (not helpful, I know).

Average highs in July in Munich are in the upper 70's to mid 80's F. Those are averages. When I was there in early July a couple of years ago it was in the upper 80's and low 90's. Very hard to predict.

I have stayed at this hotel before. Great location. But, as you said, no A/C. They do offer fans at the front desk, it really wasn't good enough for us. In the future I'll stay elsewhere with A/C. Your mileage may vary.

I've stayed at this hotel many times in June. Sometimes we've been very comfortable and other times absolutely miserable because of the unpredictable temperature. But air-conditioning is definitely NOT common in Munich, and you'll pay dearly for a hotel that has it. Look at the Platzl or the Hotel Torbrau for such extravagances as air conditioning.

Do they at least have fans? We were in Munich during a heat wave a couple of years ago and our hotel didn't even have a fan.

It was in the 90's in Munich when we were there a couple of years ago. We were very grateful for the excellent AC at our Motel One.
Heat waves in Germany are much more common then they used to be. Personally, I would rather have a hotel with AC and not need it then the other way around.

Average highs in July are mid 74-76 according to the weather almanac. Unless your room is getting full afternoon sun or it is unseasonable warm you should be fine. Most apartments, houses and hotel rooms in Munich don't have AC for the simple reason that they just don't need except for a few days a year.

I was in Munich for three nights the last week in June, two of the days were definite broilers. There is no AC at my Pension but for the price I would not expect it either.

Thank you all for the responses. After talking with my husband he would like to have the option of A/C. I have now booked Hotel Deutsche Eiche which is a 2 minute walk from Hotel Am V. This was the only available option that was in our budget in this location. Has anyone stayed here? Thanks.

Hope you know that the Deutsche Eiche is the oldest Munich gay hotel.
I have my lunch there often (it's one of the most cost-effective restaurants in the Gärtnerplatz area) and while the people are really kind I feel nontheless that I'm in a certain sense the outsider. I don't care, hopefully you don't either.
