I am looking for a hostel/hotel in Koblenz & Marburg that will fit into a college student's budget. A friend, who teaches German is taking eight of her students to Germany in the spring and I volunteered to help find places to stay. ;) Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi,
The HI hostel in Koblenz I can help you with that since I stayed there once. ....It's located in a Prussian fortress Festung Ehrenbreitstein built shortly after the defeat of Napoleon to guard against a resurgent France as Die Wacht am Rhein, (the watch over the Rhine). From the hostel you can see the Deutsches Eck where the Mosel and Rhine flow into each other, ie, a great view from the hostel. I stayed there in 1971, saw the place again in '87 and it had been refurbished then. Since then it has been again modernised to accommodate all the technology. If that student group (eight students is perfect ) is going to Marburg and Koblenz, you've picked two good, cultural and very historical cities to visit. Marburg has an HI hostel too but never stayed there. Which other towns/cities are part of their itinerary?
Note that the Koblenz hostel is WELL away from the city center, high on a precipice on the opposite riverbank. Students will require transportation to get there and to the Deutsches Eck. The other drawback is that during the school year, groups at DJH hostels are typically school classes on outings; kids are much younger than college-age kids (pre-teens,) tend to be weakly supervised, and often raise holy H day and night. Really.
I would look into the independent, reasonably-priced and more conveniently-located Hotel Jan van Werth. It rates well and is in between the old town and the main train station (which the group may be using for outings, right... Marksburg Castle is just 10 minutes south of Koblenz' main station and open year-round for tours.)
Thank you! Your response has been very helpful!
We stayed at the Hotel Hamm in Koblenz. An older apartment building converted to a hotel. Rooms are good size with updated shower. Rickity elevator for 2 persons with luggage. Breakfast is buffet style with a good selection. 6 min walk from the main train station. Friendly and very helpful staff. Reasonably priced - from Eur 111. http://www.booking.com/hotel/de/hamm.en-gb.html?aid=311088;label=hotel-66334-de-SEEFsFvOeIchLBY70Daf%2AwS877426683%3Apl%3Ata%3Ap1%3Ap2%3Aac%3Aap1t1%3Aneg%3Afi%3Atikwd-5045183544%3Alp9001461%3Ali%3Adec%3Adm;sid=e6250da58fd052424e7d10ed4f05b25f;dcid=4;dist=0;room1=A%2CA;sb_price_type=total;srfid=88bbbecf6aeb4b3c7bb0ade9a3d1979de7145601X1;type=total;ucfs=1&
