hollentalbahn

I would like to use the hollentalbahn from Freiburg to Donaueschingen. I reviewed the bahn de site. I see the regional train options, then bus from Titensee to Donaueschingen. Is this the scenic route so highly publicized??? Thank you

It is very confusing when you have two threads running at the same time with the same title.

Lee answered in the other copy that the bus is the SEV while the line is being worked on. It has been that way for quite a while, and I don't know when trains will be back on the tracks.

The bus can't exactly follow the train tracks. It is nice enough, but by its very nature not the same.

I will remedy this situation by moving my remarks to this thread.

Is this the scenic rail route??

If you are talking about currently, looking at the Bahn schedule you should see that the bus from Titisee-Neustadt to Donaueschingen is an SEV (Schienen Ersatz Verkehr, a bus used to substitute for the train when they are working on the tracks.

According to the Bahn website, that SEV substiture will continue until October 31. After that the route still shows a bus section, this time from Titisee-Neustadt to Triberg, then rail to Donaueschingen. I don't know what happened to the direct rail link from Titisee to Donaueschingen, the section that was being substituted by the SEV bus until Oct 31. I know that the rail line used to be there; I was on it in 1988 when I went by direct train from Donaueschingen to Titisee-Neustadt. I think that was the Hollentalbahn. By the middle of December the connection via Triberg will be replaced with what looks like regularly scheduled buses between Titisee-Neustadt and Donaueschingen with a change in Löffingen Bahnhof.

Löffingen Bahnhof seems to be in the middle of the route of the Hollentalbahn.

I read on Wikipedia that the section between Freiburg and Neustadt is electrified, but Neustadt to Donaueschingen is not, requiring a change of trains in Neustadt, but Neustadt to Donaueschingen is eventually to be electrified. Maybe that is why Neustadt to Donaueschingen is currently replaced by SEV links, and then by regularly scheduled buses. Hopefully, the part of the Höllentalbahn between Neustadt and Donaueschingen has not been abandoned.

Your guess is correct: The section between Neustadt and Donaueschingen is currently being electrified, along with some other work on tracks and stations. The entire construction work is scheduled to be finished by mid December (with the train schedule change that happens every year at this time).

On the contrary, the line is being upgraded and integrated in the Breisgau S-Bahn system and will offer much better connections with Freiburg from december. Thanks to the reorientation of politics concerning transportation, closing a railway line is no longer as easy as it was twenty years ago. Details of the project can be found here.
