I'm looking at doing Rick's Munich Walk tour one day when visiting the city. I see it ends at the Hofgarten. In the tour text he mentions about Cafe Tambosi for a coffee but I'm wondering is there anyplace in or near that or the Hofgarten that we can get a good beer and walk into the Hofgarten?

I don't know what the rules are in Germany about buying a beer in a bar and just walking out with it, but there are several restaurants and bars about 150 yd north of Tambosi adjacent to Hofgarten.
Looks like at least one of them, Schumanns, might have outdoor seating next to the park.

I expect that Tambosi also serves beer, maybe a smaller selection, since other parts of its menu are modeled after an Italian bar.

Cafe Tambosi definitely serves beer. Alternatively, go to the Rewe City grocery store in the Fünf Höfe, buy a few bottles of Augustiner for 0,70€ each and go enjoy them on a bench in the Hofgarten.
