Hi everyone, I need some advice! I am going to be spending a week with my German friend who lives and hikes all the time in Bavaria. We are going to do a three-night hike from Oberammergau to Fussen (I am sure I am mixing up my German and English here so please forgive me). I read some blogs about the hike between Brunnkopfhous to Kenzenhutte and it sounds like it is very scary with drop-offs for three hours of the hike. I am a relatively good hiker but have not done any hiking in the area (I'm from Virginia in the US) and I'm worried that I may be in over my head. Can someone tell me a bit more about that stretch of the hike and if there is an alternative. My friend has confidence in me but I'm not so sure.... :) We are going Sept. 4 - 6. Thanks!
The trail from the Brunnenkopfhütte to the Kenzenhütte via Klammspitze is demanding but not dangerous. However, it is only walkable in good weather (except for extremely unreasonable people). A comfortable alternative would be to descend to Linderhof Castle and to continue via the Sägertal and the Bäckenalmsattel (at approx. 1500m altitude) to the Kenzenhütte. This is, after a short segment in the forest, a nice walk, but more a mountain stroll than a mountain tour. ;)
A topographic map can be found here. Search for "Kenzenhütte" and locate the path to the east via "Bäckenalm" - "Bäckenalmsattel" - "Sägertal Dienst-H(ütte)" - "Sägertal". You would follow it in the reverse direction.
Have fun!

The route is described as “moderate”. As stated above, it should be OK as long as the weather is good. I would want hiking poles for terrain like that—-it helps with my vertigo.
Thanks so much for the reassurance! I do have hiking poles and should have only a 20lb backpack so balance won't be off. Really appreciate the fast responses!
