Hiking from Alspitzbahn Bergstation to hollentalklamm (or other direction)

As stated in the title, we are looking to hike down from the Alpitzbahn bergstation to hollentalklamm gorge and then back to Hammersbach or possibly the other direction. We are a family of 7 teenagers and 4 reasonably in shape adults. Should we be hiking down or hiking up? Only looking to go one way. Are the paths reasonably marked or is there a map we should be buying? Any details I might be overlooking? We will be hiking in the beginning of July.

Or is there a better hike we are missing that has some mountain hiking and stellar views around the Garmisch area.

Thanks again.

About twenty years ago I hiked the main stretch of Hollentalklamm up to one of the huts, then back down, taking up most of the day. Fantastic. A slog going up, though going downhill can also be a strain on your knees and ankles. Can be slippy. Clearly marked. Good shoes required.

I'll be 68 this year and I'm planning on doing this in September, taking the Alspitzbahn and hiking downhill. I never hiked the section from the Alspitzbahn to the Hollentalklamm trail. From what I've read this takes about 1.5 hours and is the trickiest part in terms of bends, ledges etc, a bit of uphill thrown in.

Will take all day. Hammersbach Hotel is a good spot for a celebratory drink and meal afterwards.

There's a few ways of getting down from the Wank, an easier, scenic hike.
