Hike to Eagles Nest

My Husband is thinking of hiking up to the Eagles Nest from the parking lot area. Any recommendations? How long does it take? He is a marathoner and in great shape. He would like to know if this is something you can also run during some parts of the hike or is it too steep? thanks!

According to Google maps the hike from the Busbahnhof in Obersalzburg to the Nest is about 5 miles and takes about 1½ hrs. When I've been at the Eagles' Nest, I've seen people hiking up. The price of going to the Eagles' Nest is for the bus up and the elevator. If you hike all the way up, there is no one at the door collecting admission.

Hiking should be easy for him. You don't see many running the slopes, even if they are able to do so for short distances. Wandering is all about the moment, not speed.

From the Jenner summit you can see the National Park's landmark Watzmann mountain and at its foot the Königsee lake.

I guess the question is which "parking lot area" are we talking about? I assumed you were talking about the car "parking lot area" down in Obersalzberg, which you could get to by your own car or by city bus from the Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof ZOB, from which the special buses go up to the Nest. The Obersalzberg parking lot is as far as you could go by car. The road up to the Eagles' Nest is closed except for the special buses. Hiking up from there would take about an hour and a half and would save you the 16,60€ fare for the special bus.

The hike Going refers to is from the upper parking lot just below the Nest, which is only for the special buses. From there most people ride the elevator (included with the special bus ticket), but you can hike up. Hiking from there would not save any money. You would still have to pay to ride the special bus up to the bus parking lot.

Google says that takes about 20 minutes. It's pretty steep but short. I once hiked down to the bus.

Mike, I went in early June and it was completely overcast with low clouds when I got to the lower parking lot by bus from Berchtesgaden, so I decided to skip the trip up to Eagle's Nest and spent about 2.5-3 hours in the Documentation Center, which was my main reason for going. The museum is very interesting, very well done, and at the end you visit the bunkers which are incredible. When I went back to the bus stop, the entire area was fogged in, visibility about 20-30 feet.
