Herrenchiemsee palace to Neuenschwanstein castle

Is it possible or even manageable to travel from Herrenchiemsee palace to Neuenschwanstein castle and tour each in the same day?

yes scythian, staying near chiemsee, would plan on seeing it in the morning and drive to Neuenschwanstein. Just didnt know if that leaves decent amount of time to get there and get on a tour..

Get your N’stein tickets in advance. You have to pick them up 90 minutes before the tour

Hi Lisa- it is a hard 150 Km drive over mostly single lane roads through multiple small towns from Prien to Fussen. If you don't have any major delays you should be able to make it in under 3 hours, So figure out what time the last tour is in Fussen, subtract 3 hours from that, and it will tell you when you must leave Prien. This will let you know how fast you need to tour Schloss Herrenchiemsee . Don't forget the boat ride takes about 15 minutes and runs on a schedule.

If I were you, I would spend as much time as needed at Schloss Herrenchiemssee (both inside and the grounds which are great) then drive to Fussen and spend the night. Then visit both of the Fussen Castles the next day.

Have a great trip!!!

Think of it this way - what time will you try to reserve for the Neuschwanstein tour?

If you are checked out early and caught the first boat at 8:00 and get on the first English tour at Herrenchiemsee at 9:00, you could be back across the lake at 11:30. Three hour drive plus or minus (lunch, toilets, maybe a photo) and it is 2:30 when you get to Schwangau, maybe a bit later if you have trouble parking and the three hour drive had some plus. Call it 3pm when you reach the head of the line to collect your tickets. You need to collect your tickets 90 minutes before the tour.

It will then take time to get up to the building on foot, bus or carriage, 30-45 minutes if you don't stop.

So, what time would you feel comfortable making nonrefundable reservations for? Chucking our time in the summer is 6pm.

As they say on the website:

Your entrance ticket is valid for a guided tour of the castle at a particular time. We would like to explicitly point out that the tours begin punctually. Please allow sufficient time to get up to the castle, as if you arrive too late you will no longer be able to participate in the tour.

IMHO, this would only be possible if you reserved your Neuschwanstein Castle tickets in advance (see the ticket center web site for details). The tour time is by reservation only and the tickets must be picked up in person at the ticket center in the center of town on the day of the tour. The tour is approximately 1.5 hours in length not including the walk/ride up the hill and back.

I personally would not attempt to do both in one day...

Thank you everyone! This definitely gives me a better timetable to go by. It's been 40 years since I have been there. Back then we just meandered and when we saw a great place to stay we would stop. We will just do them two different days. Best town/hotel near the area to stay in? We will have a car obviously and can even go to Reutte area. Also, is it possible in early april to travel to salzburg via innsbruck? Thanks for all your suggestions!!
