Help With Train Construction

Hello,

My family and I will be traveling from Munich and Salzburg in early May, and we are very excited! I was looking into purchasing the Bayern-Ticket for our trip from the Munich airport to Salzburg, since it seems like a great deal and gives us some great travel flexibility. One thing I noticed however, was that there seems to be some track construction going on the day of our travel.

According to the pdf I found here: https://www.meridian-bob-brb.de/uploads/bb/schedule/103/fahrplanabweichung-munchen-rosenheim-salzburg-vom-28-04-13-05-2018.pdf when I look at Saturday, 5 May it seems that only every other hourly train is affected, correct? The ones that are affected, we would have to stop at Priem am Chiensee, get on a bus, and wait 2 stops down for the next hourly train? This isn't a huge deal, as we were considering stopping for a little while at Chiensee anyways. My trouble is, when I search for trains on the DB website, they only show me the unaffected trains. So am I reading this pdf right, or will the train only be running every 2 hours instead of hourly?

Thanks!

I assume that is correct but check with an information point when you get there. In the summer, especially on weekend, track maintenance is common. The train company always makes provisions, generally with buses, for getting around the maintenance site. Maybe be a little slow and inconvenient but it called going with the flow.

They do, since if you take the train / substitue bus combo you would catch in Übersee the Meridian which leaves Munich exactly one hour later. I.e., you can depart from Munich one hour later and still arrive in Salzburg at the same as the train / bus connection.

clemsongreg, there is a vital sentence in the document you linked to:

Nicht aufgeführte Zugverbindungen fahren an allen Tagen ohne Abweichungen.
= Train connections not listed run on all days without diversion.

I.E. the document only shows the affected trains, not the unaffected ones. And since the unaffected trains overtake the buses, on the DB site (which always shows the quickest option) if you do a search from Munich to Salzburg it is only showing the unaffected trains.

My guess (and its only a guess) is that they are repairing one track at a time, leaving the other track in use. That means the trains can only go in one direction at a time, same as at a roadworks where they put in temporary traffic lights. With only one track, the capacity is reduced, so only the long distance trains can fit down the single line, and the local trains are replaced by buses. This is a common technique.
If you do a search Priem am Chiensee to Salzburg, it will show bus+train.

And if you search Prien to Übersee, you will see the SEV bus for the train that ends at Prien, but it gets to Übersee after the other train leaves, so you have to stay in Übersee until the train from Munich to Salzburg (the next one, that goes straight through) get there.

So you might as well stay in Munich another hour and take the "unaffected" train.
