Help with Königsee

I'm new to the site, so I apologize if this has been covered...I reviewed a few pages but didn't see anything so maybe I'm not beating this to death. Anyway, I'm going to spend a couple days in Salzburg in September and would like to take a day trip over to Königsee. I've read on multiple pages how to do this - take Bus 840 to Berchtesgaden, then one of the buses to the Königsee Parkplatz. Well while doing my planning/budgeting, I was searching for these prices for the time period I'll be traveling (planning on 18 September) and the bus is no longer an option according to the ÖBB website! So I did some digging and it appears that the last day this bus will run is 25 May. Is this because they're discontinuing this route or is it just too far in advance? As of now, it's showing the only way to get to Berchtesgaden is to take the train, connecting in Freilassing. That's not a huge deal, except the price goes from €5.80 to €13.90 per trip. The second part of my dilemma is getting to Schönau am Königsee from Berchtesgaden. According to DB, the price for this 9 minute bus ride is €25 one way, which means double that to get back to the train station, making the transportation for this day trip around €78 ($87) in total. I realize the option to walk from the train station to the parking lot is there, however it's along the road (I believe) and will add an additional hour to the time I already plan to spend hiking that day to Obersee etc. Can anyone please offer some advice? Maybe I'm overlooking or misunderstanding something.

Since the Bus is run by RVO, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, the ÖBB website is not the best starting point for researches. The timetable for summer 2019 (valid till October, 19) can be found here (scroll down to "Fahrplan", a PDF will pop up).

€25 is the price of a Bayern Ticket (which might be a solution for the entire trip, depending on the size of your group and the number of trips); but normally you're better off with a BGL Tagesticket Bus&Bahn which covers al trips in the area.

Considering the parking fee and the overall parking situation in Königssee, renting a car for the Salkzburg - Königssee trip is really a bad idea.

Have a look at the RVO Oberbayernbus website - that for the local transportation in that part of the world.

For example the map of Berchtesgaden buses shows https://www.rvo-bus.de/oberbayernbus/view/mdb/regiobusfranken/oberbayernbus/mdb183234liniennetzplan_berchtesgaden.pdf buses 843 and 846 serve Schönau .

https://www.rvo-bus.de/oberbayernbus/view/fahrplan/liniennetzplan.shtml?dbkanal007=L01S01D041KIN0001top-navi-flyout-fahrplan-liniennetzplanLZ01 gets you to the list of maps.

https://www.rvo-bus.de/oberbayernbus/view/tarif/kombitickets/bgl-ticket.shtml has information on the all day BGL ticket valid on almost everything moving in Berchtesgadenland. €14 for the day. Any good?

I’m doing a visit to Eagle’s Nest and then on to overnight in Hallstatt and am renting a car, to be flexible on what I stop for, and when.

I understand there are certain tours you can pay for to get you from Salzburg to Berchegasden (sp?) for daily tours, maybe there are ones to get you to Königsee. I’d probably prefer to let someone else drive if I had the option.

Rent a car.

Totally unnecessary!

RVO sells a "Tagesticket" (day pass) for their buses for "around" 10-11€/adult (their website is down right now, so I can't confirm that price, but it is less than the BGL Tagesticket Bus & Bahn). You can buy it from the bus driver in Salzburg. It will get you to and from Berchtesgaden on bus 840, and it is also valid on most bus routes in Berchtesgaden, including to and from Königsee (Schönau a. Königsee).

Edit: The RVO site is up again. The RVO Tagesticket is 10,40€ for an adult.

The last bus from Berchtesgaden back to Salzburg leaves the Berchtesgaden Hbf at around 1800 (6 PM), so if you want to stay later, you'll have to come back on the train. If you think you will stay late and need the train, buy the BGL Tagesticket Bus & Bahn mentioned above.

Even though RVO (Regionalverkehr Oberbayern) is run by the Bahn, the Bahn does not sell tickets online for the bus nor show prices, so the only ticket they show that covers any part of Salzburg to Königsee is the Bayern-Ticket at 25€ for the first person, 7€ each for persons 2 - 5. The Bayern-Ticket would cover you from the Salzburg Hbf to Berchtesgaden Hbf and then from Berchtesgaden Hbf to Schönau a. Königsee and back to Salzburg, but only for leaving Salzburg after 9 AM workdays (any time on weekend days). The Bayern-Ticket definitely covers you for the train from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and maybe on the 840 bus too. Ask the driver.

The Bayern-Ticket is 7€ more per person while the Tagestickets are per person, so if you have a big enough group, the Bayern-Ticket might be less, but unlike the RVO Tagesticket and the BGL Tagesticket, the Bayern-Ticket can only be used after 9 AM on workdays.
