Dear Forum,
We are ( 50+ couple, who like to travel) planning our trip to Germany - Austria.
We traveled to Germany 10 years ago with kids and used itinerary from Rick Steves book : “Romantic Road” (From Calogne (Köln) … to Munich).
This trip we would like to see Munich again (maybe 4-5 days) and rent a car and go to Rogensburg for a day and sleep and visit Salzburg - 2 days + ( and around ) and Vienna 2-3 days? (and around)
Can you recommend me, please, what places to visit on the road to Salzburg and Vienna and back. Ideally to make station in 3-4 cities and make a day trips.
Our preferences: history, museums, concert, sightseeing (short hikes, lakes…)
Thank you very much for all advices !
It sounds like you want to drive all that way, is that right, rather than using the trains to link up places?
Sounds like about a two week trip, or are you asking about 3-4 additional places to go in addition to those you have mentioned (3-4 weeks total?). Given how easy and cheap it is to use trains to reach the destinations you mention (Regensburg, Salzburg, Vienna) I wonder if you have a particular need for car. Grazing car rental websites suggests ten days car rental post-Munich will cost around $1000 plus diesel which is more expensive than ever. Research the Bayern ticket on Bahn.com which is very cheap this summer for travel in Bavaria. You would need other tickets to go to Vienna.
Other places to consider might be Berchtesgaden, Garmish-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, Innsbruck and the lovely valleys south of there (Stubaital and Zillertal), and there are other places too numerous to mention.
The Bavarian Palace Administration website has lots of information you might find useful.
The train is definitely the way to go, and a lot easier on your pocket. The train to Salzburg is an easy and fast trip. If you have already been to Munich, 4-5 days is a lot, unless you plan on a lot of day trips. The idea of Garmisch is a good one. Beautiful scenery. You can also take the train from Garmisch to Innsbruck Austria for a day trip or overnight. Lovely scenery.
Thank you very much for all advices.
Yes, rent a car is very expensive. I am trying to find some coupons or use corporate rates ( I didn’t do research yet - first I would like to make itinerary) I don’t mind to take a train - we always packing light(carryons), but if you have a car we can stop in some small villages, hike in some parks, sightseeing places, plus during Covid time, with car you have less places to be with people in the same room. I am not scared to get Covid ( we both vaccinated), but right now we need PCR test to go back to US and if test will be positive, we can be “lucky” to stay 10 more days in Munich 😀
But, I’ll considering “train travel”
