Help with Germany and Amsterdam Honeymoon Itinerary

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are planning a 3-week honeymoon in Germany, with a brief stop in Amsterdam. We will be travelling in August, 2024. We are looking for feedback on our itinerary. We are planning to travel primarily by train, but we are considering renting a car to do part of the Romantic Road (but open for suggestions on this idea). We are 28 and 30, Canadian, and are interested in wine, fine dining, coffee, scenic landscapes, museums, short hikes and smaller towns and villages. We like our travel to be a mix of leisurely days where we spend the day walking around and finding cool places to grab a glass of wine, and fast-paced days where we are doing touristy things. I have been to Munich, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Amsterdam and Berlin, and while I am happy to go back, I am also open to alternatives. My husband has been to none of these cities. We must end our trip in Berlin, as my husband is running the half marathon on August 25th.

While we are open to any feedback, we are specifically wondering about the following questions:

  1. Is 5 nights too many in Munich?
  2. Should we do the Romantic Road by car or just pick a couple of towns and do it by train?
  3. Is 2 nights too many in Rothenburg?
  4. Any other suggested stops that we have missed? Anything you would skip or spend more time on?

Tentative Itinerary

Flying from Canada and landing in Munich on August 7thMunich (5 nights)

Rent a car in Munich to do Romantic Road

Drive to and spend a half day in Dinkelsbuhl (do we need an overnight?)

Drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg (2 nights)

Drive to Wurzburg and return car in Wurzburg

Wurzburg (2 nights)

Train from Wurzburg to Mainz (3 hours)

Mainz (3 nights) with wine tour of the Rhine

Train from Mainz to Amsterdam (5 hours)

Amsterdam (5 nights) with day trip to Volendam or Giethoorn

Train from Amsterdam to Berlin (6 hours)

Berlin (5 nights)

Departing from Berlin on August 28th

  1. imo yes, 3 shall be enough maybe add parts of German Alpine Road by car
  2. car allows more individual freedom - you can turn in from Alpine Road
  3. imo yes
  4. May be add something like special overnight stops such as castles / palaces.

Around Mainz spend a day exploring the Rheingau (other side of Rhine, see map on bottom of this page) with its castles / palaces and wineyards. Enjoy a lunch / dinner at Schloss Johannisberg with a glas of Rotlack or Grünlack (very tasteful and refreshing white wine).

With this interactive tourist map of Germany you can filter sights and attractions based on your interests and regions.

I don’t think 2 nights is Rothenburg is too many, but the minimum for a non-rushed itinerary. Last fall I spent 5 nights on my 5th visit.

5 nights in Munich ? Depends on what you want to do/see. Plan it out.

I’d reconsider Wurzburg and Mainz and instead opt for a village nearby.

Thanks! Any suggestions for small villages/towns instead of Würzburg and Mainz? Would this be the best idea without a car?

Rhine town: Oberwesel's Auf Schoenburg Castle-Hotel would be honeymoon-appropriate. The old town wall there makes for a scenic stroll.

Other great towns include Boppard, Braubach, Bacharach, Rüdesheim, St. Goar. Each has its advantages. You may also wish to stay on the Mosel River which is very close by and even more romantic, some say.

An overnight isn't needed for Dinkelsbuhl. Reconsider Wurzburg. The Prince Bishop's Residenze is, in my opinion, not to be missed since you will be close by in Rothenburg. But if you do skip it, consider Miltenberg. Very similar to Rothenburg, but not as many tourist.
