Help with Deutsch Bahn- buying group tickets online?

Hi all,

My sister is traveling with her family (there will be 7 in all) from Frankfurt to Bacharach by train. Every time we try to research it on the Deutsch Bahn site, it says "no online fares available". I tried on the Rail Europe site, and they want to charge 315 euros, which is outrageous...

I wanted to help her buy the tickets before she goes, so she has one less thing to worry about, but can't seem to find a way. I even tried to break her group into 3 + 4 people, and I can't buy them from the Deutsch Bahn site...

Thanks in advance for your advice,
Lora

P.S. We are meeting her in Bacharach, and I feel more comfortable helping her buy the rest of the train tickets.... I just thought it would be helpful if she was able to arrive in Europe with tickets for the first leg.

Your problem is that Frankfurt to Bacharach is inside the RMV transit district, so you have to buy tickets from them. The price for one person from Frankfurt Airport (my assumption) to Bacharach is 12.20 EUR, so for 7 it would be 85.40 EUR. However you can buy a Gruppentageskarte (group day ticket) for up to 5 people for 34.50 EUR, then 2 Einzelfahrkarten (regular 1-way tickets) for 24.40 EUR, so the whole transaction would be 58.90 EUR, saving you 26.50 EUR.

Generally you buy these tickets out of vending machines, but you can wait in line and buy at a ticket window.

Here is the RMV website.

BTW, you mention a family of 7. Are any of them children 6 to 14 years old? They get half price tickets.

Yes, you can select the language on ticket vending machines.

More on children. Children 6 to 14 travel free if traveling with at least one parent or grandparent. They must be listed on the ticket. Children under 6 travel free always and don't need to be listed on the ticket.
If there are more than 4 children under 15, you can get a DB Family Card at the Reisezentrum (DB ticket office) at the airport. That will simplify things like listing names on the ticket.
