Help with day trips?

Hi everyone,

I haven't traveled much in Europe, and I'm wondering what your advice is about day trips. In particular, what do you do when you're "passing through" a town on the way to somewhere else? Where do you store your luggage?

For example, here are some of the places I might like to stop at for a few hours:

  • Würzburg (passing from Leipzig to Rothenburg ob der Tauber)
  • Nürnberg (passing from Rothenburg to Munich)
  • Bautzen (passing from Dresden to Görlitz)

I know some train stations have lockers, but do they fit full-size luggage? And what about places that don't have lockers?

Thanks for your help!

Wuerzburg and Nuremberg should have plenty large size lockers. Bautzen does not show any lockers. When I have encountered this, I generally found that the Tourist Information Office would hold bags for me for a short time (2-3 hours) as long as it was within their opening hours. In the case of Bautzen, it is located in the Haupt Markt, which is a ways from the train station.

You can also try Googling something like Luggage Storage Bautzen. It seems that more and more companies are trying to get into that business, in some cases by identifying small businesses in under-served areas that are interested in the extra revenue from a low-overhead service. In such cases there may be no locker involved. Some of the lockers I've seen in bus and train stations looked too small for anything larger than a carry-on bag, and I suspect it would be very challenging to find information about locker size on the internet.

In a pinch I have asked a not-busy hotel and a bar if they would hold my bags for a few hours. Both said "Yes". Obviously, you have to be prepared not to find anyone willing to do that.

Just to emphasize the previous post - if the train station doesn't have what you need, do check the bus station as well.
