Help with an Itinerary - South West Germany, where to go after visiting the Mosel and Rhine Valley?

I am relatively new here but in reading thru the forums it looks like this is a great place to get practical advice and better than AI :-)

We are planning a 2 week trip for the last 2 weeks of April. We have the first part of our trip organized (we are there to see the tulips) but are struggling with the second half given everything is so close. We will be using trains in Netherlands/Belgium but will get a rental car once we get to Germany. We depart out of Frankfurt. We are active and interested in more of the small towns and local foods and markets. We want to avoid 'one night stays' in a towns or cities where we can.

Amsterdam/Netherlands (staying in Haarlem) - 4 days/5 nights
Belgium (staying in Ghent) - 3 days/3 nights, then take the train to Germany to gran a rental car
Mosel and/or Rhine town (like a Cochem or Boppard) for 2 days/3 nights (to do some cycling, hiking, short river cruises)

So, what do we do with last couple of nights? Go south to Colmar/Strasbourg in the Alsace ... head east to Wurzburg/Rotheberg, or stay longer in the Model/Rhine area and visit places like Heidelberg given we will have 2 days/2 nights given it will be late April.

The last night we need to end up in either Frankfurt or Mainz prior to early flight the next morning.

Any suggestions based on experience with similar itineraries is appreciated!

Stay in Strasbourg to visit the Alsatian Rue de Vin villages for a few nights.

You could go to Colmar and Strasbourg. Both are in a lovely area and Strasbourg is a wonderful city to visit.

But if you're looking for a small town experience, you might enjoy Gengenbach in the Black Forest. I stayed in Gengenbach for 4 nights and absolutely loved it. It's a charming and beautiful town with many half-timbered houses and is considered one of the prettiest towns in the Black Forest. I also especially enjoyed seeing the Vogtsbauerhof open-air museum, which is a short distance away in Gutach. I spent several hours there and consider it well worth seeing. It's in a beautiful setting, too, and there are several cafes/restaurants right across from it where you can have a meal or coffee. Schiltach is another charming village in the Black Forest that I stopped by, along with Haslach, which is part of the 'Deutsche Fachwerkstraße', the route linking Germany's medieval timber-framed houses..

Staying here, you could easily visit Strasbourg if you liked, as it is right over the border.

Mosel and/or Rhine town (like a Cochem or Boppard) for 2 days/3 nights (to do some cycling, hiking, short river cruises)

Coupla tips here. Mosel cruise from Cochem > Beilstein is nice (about 1 hr. each way.) Except for a couple days around Easter (long before your arrival,) April cruises typically take place only on Sat and Sun. In 2023, DAILY cruises began April 29. Expect similar schedule for 2024.

2023 Schedule is in bottom left box at this page:

I am not aware of other cruises on the Mosel that are operational during your visit.

Rhine cruises with K-D and Bingen-Rüdesheimer should be operational after Easter. Expect 2 daily boats from B-R and 3 from K-D for the most scenic part, which is Bingen/Rüdesheim > St.Goar/St.Goarshausen route:

I like your idea of adding one night to the Rhine/Mosel (which should yield 1.5-2 additional sightseeing days) with your final night in Mainz. Direct trains from Mainz to FRA, 3 or so per hour, take just 25 minutes. The lengthy drive to the more southerly destinations would be worthwhile if you had 4 days to kill, perhaps, but you aren't going to add all that much to your experience by leaving the Rhine/Mosel area prematurely - except for a lot of time in the car.

Prolonging your stay here provides for a more complete visit and a little more flexibility. Hiking and cruising alone will easily eat up one of your first two sightseeing days. The additional 1.5-2.0 days will still be full of options...

  • Day trip to Trier (possible stop in Bernkastel.)
  • Burg Eltz tour
  • Marksburg tour (medieval castle in Braubach, near Koblenz)
  • Boppard Chairlift ride
  • Sightseeing time in Mainz prior to your final night
  • Visit to Rüdesheim on your way to Mainz (or Frankfurt)

It would be my choice to split the 4 nights between Cochem and Boppard.

Thank you for the suggestions - I will do some more research with the helpful context provided. Interesting that no one mentioned heading east to Rothenburg area. We like to travel knowing we have a place to stay booked each night. We need to balance that with some 'slack' in our plans so we can relax a bit along the way.

Interesting that no one mentioned heading east to Rothenburg area.

Franconia (Würzburg, Nuremberg, Rothenburg and other towns in northern Bavaria) is one of my favorite regions in Germany. You might still get that opinion after a bit. But because your time is limited, your interest in hiking, in cruising, and "in more of the small towns and local foods and markets," is probably better served by the Rhine/Mosel. Here, the mix of great small Rhine/Mosel towns (and their proximity to one another,) the Rheinsteig Trail, the Rhine Castle Trail, the Moselsteig and other Mosel trails, the superior natural and man-made scenery of the Rhine/Mosel (the entire Middle Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz is a UNESCO World Heritage site,) the markets in Mainz and elsewhere, AND the enhanced time you will have to see/do things because FRA airport is so close by... together, these outweigh what Franconia can offer in that same time frame. You'd have to spend at least 5 hours in the car to travel Boppard > Rothenburg > FRA airport alone, and that's on the fastest route that uses the freeways with no detours. A few more links for the Rhine/Mosel for you...
