Help selecting train ticket

Hello all! My spouse and I will be visiting Germany Dec 6 - 14 (arrive in MUN and depart FRA). Looking at spending around 3 days in Munich and then either going to Nuremberg for a couple of nights or perhaps Stuttgart before heading to Frankfurt the night before our departure. The main point of our trip is to see Christmas markets. Not too keen on renting a car, so looking at taking train to visit the smaller towns. My question is, will the Deutsheland Ticket (I understand will need to due a cancellation as it is a subscription) be our best best or do we need to get the German Rail pass for more flexibility (ability to take ICE train if needed)? Thank you!

I am not sure that I can fully answer your question. However, my wife and I visited Bavaria this past Summer, flying into Munich.

We traveled only in Bavaria, to Augsburg and back to the airport. We traveled on the Bayern pass. It was something like 29 Euros and paid for all our rail travel, in the second class coaches.

It worked for the entire weekend, since we purchased it on Friday.
We had to travel on regional trains that stopped at many places and were slower than the ICE trains. Also, the trains were crowded and we had to stand up for several minutes.
Still, it was inexpensive and it worked.

You may use it in Bavaria or perhaps buy a pass that includes all your travel. Not sure about what trains you would use.

When looking at ticketing options, it's usually best to research the costs of each, and know the pros and ons of each. It is true that the bayern ticket is useful within Bavaria, but only on regional trains ( like the D ticket). I would point out that Stuttgart is not in Bavaria. As for a German Rail pass, are you referring to a Eurail pass? If so, I'd recommend first looking at the D Bahn website to see what the usual prices are for regular tickets between the places you want to visit. https://int.bahn.de/en

Then decide what kind of ticket will work best for your particular trip.

I recently got a Db 2nd class 30 day Banh card. Think it's call Banh 25. Cheap and saved moolah. If you're 65+ that's another bonus.

The D-Ticket will be time-flexible and just fine for...

  • MUC airport > Munich by train
  • Travel around Munich on all means of public transportation
  • Travel to Nuremberg on the regional trains (possible in 1.75 hours for certain departures.)
  • Travel around Nuremberg on all means of public transportation
  • Final S-Bahn trip from Frankfurt to FRA airport

I would figure out what date/time you wish to travel Munich to Frankfurt and pre-purchase a direct ICE train ticket from DB for travel between Nuremberg and Frankfurt. This trip is a lengthy trip using the regional trains. The cheaper saver fares will require commitment on your part to travel at the time you choose, and they are non-refundable, so be comfortable with your purchase before pulling the trigger.

You do not need a German Rail Pass (now referred to as a one-country Eurailpass for Germany.)
