HELP! Nuernberg HBF Transfer time

Hello all,

I hope someone can help me with a question. I am taking a month long trip to Central/Eastern Europe this summer and just received my Eurail pass. I am scheduling the trains that I can for my trip and am looking for some understanding on the first leg. I am flying into Frankfurt in the morning and plan on taking the 10:36 train en route to Prague. All of the train schedules I am seeing (from the Eurail reservation website and de bahn) show that it is a two stop trip, changing trains at Nuernberg HBF. I am new to this and want to make sure I have enough time to transfer. The train schedule is as below:

10:36 F FLUGHAFEN FERNBF (Germany) 12:59 NUERNBERG HBF (Germany)
ICE 621

12:59 NUERNBERG HBF (Germany) 13:09 NUERNBERG HBF VORPL H (Germany)
Walk

13:10 NUERNBERG HBF VORPL H (Germany) 16:48 PRAGUE DB-BUS (Czech Republic)
BUS42012

I am a little confused because it says two transfers and if I transfer at Neurnberg HBF, I arrive at 12:59 and depart at 12:59. I have no clue how the train is set up. If anyone has any experience with Nuernberg HBF can let me know if I am reading this correctly and if it is possible to get from one train to the next with no transfer time allowed. It seems common, I tried other trains times and they all show the same thing. Any help and knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Your leg from Nürnberg to Prague (3rd line) is not on a train, it's by the Bahn Intercity bus that runs non-stop from Nürnberg to Prague. The second line is a 10 min walk from the track area of the Nürnberg Hbf to the Vorplatz, the plaza in front of the Hbf.

Here is the layout of the Nürnberg Hbf. There are three tunnels under the track area. If you find the middle tunnel and just walk down it, through the entry hall of the station building, and out the main entrance, the stop for your bus in slightly to your right (the 'H' in the blue box on the layout). Ten minutes should be enough time, but just barely. Don't dawdle. If you train is late arriving, since it is a major train to the bus, they will probably hold the bus for a little time to allow you to make the bus.

HBF = Hauptbahnhof = Main station
VORPL = Vorplatz = Square in front of station.
It is giving you 10 minutes to walk from the train to the bus stop in front of the station. Should be plenty. You then take a bus from Nürnberg (Nuremberg) to Prague. The bus may be labelled "Prag" (German spelling) or "Praha" (Czech spelling).

My bigger concern is have you left enough time from your landing at Frankfurt to get to the station. The plane could be late and / or you could get stuck in immigration. Why aren't you flying direct to Prague?

They are considering walking from the train platform to the bus stop in front of the station (Vorplatz) as a separate leg. With 10 minutes, better hustle. The train from Frankfurt continues to Munich, so be standing by the door and exit the train the second it stops. Pull the little the handle up by the door to open if you are the one standing there. Down the stairs/escalator and follow signs to the main station area and out the door.
What is your back-up plan if your flight is delayed?

I was assuming that the plane would arrive on time. You know what happens when you assume! I'll look at getting on a few hours later, which I had originally done, but was still confused by the Nuernburg HBF transfers. Thank you all! I guess I should have known it was a bus by the DB-BUS in the description, but my mind was in train mode!

The reason I am not flying into Prague is because of three reasons really. Number 1, The price was $400 cheaper than to fly into Prague with similar timing as the one into Frankfurt. 2, I am not spending much time in Germany, so the scenery will be nice. 3, there are no direct flights into Prague from Philly, whereas my flight into Frankfurt is 7 hours. All flights into Prague are over 10.

Were there flights into Munich? There are direct trains and an IC bus from Munich to Prague.

I don't know about you but I'd rather take a beating than ride a bus!

You can take this route all on train

Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf 11:02 4:37 travel time 0 changes ICE1660 Dresden Hbf 15:39 arrival
Dresden Hbf 17:08 2:20 0 EC177 Praha hl.n. 19:28

It would have an hour and a half in Dresden Hbf - but it is a pretty cool station - time for a beer!

For me, this - even with the wait - would be preferable. There are other times that have 1 change in Leipzig before Dresden with the same total travel time. To search this route you need to search the two legs separately on the DB website.

I see you have a Rail Pass - I love them and have traveled all over without ever reserving or paying a supplement - you just have to be creative & flexible in your routing sometimes. If I can't find the trains I want searching from my point A to point B I look at the map and route through a larger city near my route - sometimes that works.

Regarding Christie's comment, generally I avoid buses too.

But, that's no common bus. It is a double decker with food and drink, attendant service (like a flight attendant but not flying), facilities, and comfort. Like a train, but on wheels. Run and operated by the DB. And much faster than the train.

A 6+-hour train (or train + bus) ride after a transatlantic flight sounds just a bit too rigorous.

I'd much prefer to split the journey. No matter what hour my plane got in, I'd catch a direct train to Nuremberg with my railpass (2.5 hours - much more doable) check in, shower up, stretch my legs around town a bit, have a good meal, try to stay awake until at least 19:00. Then the next morning catch one of the direct morning buses from Nuremberg to Prague (just 3.5 hours.) At the DB site you can pre-purchase that bus trip at a discounted saver fare for perhaps as little as €14, including seat reservation - and thus avoid the use of an additional railpass day.

These IC buses are some very nice buses. I've used them twice and am doing so again on the Prague-N'berg run 2 weeks from now.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I actually looked at later trains and found one that goes into Dresden then into Prague. That way I don't have to worry about a delayed flight. I think I am going to wing the first leg and not make any reservations in case I run into issues with the flight. Looks like I have many options, Dresden, Liepzig, Nuernberg, or Munich.

I scratched the bus idea, thinking that it would be largely uncomfortable, but from the sounds of it, it would be kind of fun!

Thanks again everyone!
