Help for Bavarian Itinerary

Hi, my adult son who is very interested in classical music and I are going on a Danube river cruise. Before that, though, we would like to see some German towns and cities. My inclination is toward the charming towns, but I am truly open. I tentatively have the following plan, but could use help with ideas and especially train/bus help. I wasn't planning on renting a car but if it seems much preferred, we could consider it.

Day 1, Saturday: because we arrive so early I thought we could train right to Rothenberg, enjoy the day and spend the night. (alternative is to do this first day in Wurzburg but I thought we might use the time better later?).

Day 2: head off to Bamberg, a city recommended here and one my son really wants to see. I realize we will likely train through Nuremberg here so not sure if we should see Nuremburg on Day 2 and then do Bamberg on Day 3? We will see Regensburg and Passau on the cruise so don't want to add them here.

Day 3: Head to Munich and tour Munich for the day. (We will have a little more time for Munich after the cruise)

Day 4: Take a day trip from Munich to the Zugspitze or Oberammergau or The Chiemsee or even Fussen.

Day 5: We could do another day in lower Germany here (see above or your idea?). Or even go to Salzburg so we have two days there?

Day 6: Go to Salzburg and tour for the day. Mozart-related activities a must! At night, head to Budapest apparently through Vienna.[We have the option for a day trip to Salzburg on the river cruise, but we would have to miss Linz then. I must mention that in case skipping Salzburg makes the trip to Budapest much better].

Day 7: Budapest

Day 8: Budapest

Day 9: Budapest in morning and start river cruise in the afternoon.

.......after the cruise lands in Vilshosen we are heading to Munich and flying out the next afternoon so have a little more time for Munich that day and the following morning.

Thank you for your help.

MUC to Rothenburg is going to take you 3½ to 4½ hour with 3 or 4 train changes. Do you really want to do that when jetlagged? I would suggest doing Munich the first day, then maybe playing it by ear from there.

I really enjoyed the Mozart House in Salzburg-you can see a piano he actually played!

You could save some travel time by rearranging your route a bit, e.g.,

day 1: FRA - Rothenburg (look up whether your airline participates in the Rail&Fly programm of the Bahn so that you can hop on any long distance train as soon as you have cleared immigration)

day 2: Rothenburg - Nürnberg (2 nights; for the trip use a VGN TagesticketPlus, € 19 for two *) ), with a

day 3: day trip to Bamberg

day 4: München (2 nights)

day 5: day trip to a. Chiemsee or b. Oberammergau / Ettal / Linderhof or c. Füssen (personally I'd do variant b., which will make the most of your day)

BTW, how is it that you can see on your cruise Regensburg, even though it ends in Vilshofen, which is 100 km SE of Regensburg?

Re the interest of your son in classical music: you might want to check the program of the Nuremberg Opera (shows also concerts by the Philharmonic Orchestra), the Nürnberger Symphoniker orchestra or the well known Bamberger Symphoniker.

*) If your trip from Rothenburg to Nuremberg is on a saturday you can use the same VGN ticket for the trip to Bamberg on sunday

Thank you! That is the kind of info that is so helpful to us. When I look on the map, I also found it odd we are taking a city tour of Regensburg on our river cruise, but that is what the itinerary states. My son will be thrilled to see Mozart's piano!

Here are some additional questions, and thank you in advance for your help:

1) We already have our air tickets with points (United but flying Lufthansa). Is it too late for the rail and fly program? If so what train do you recommend from Frankfurt airport to Rothenburg?
2) The Tagesticket sounds great. We are leaving Rothenburg on Saturday so does it make sense to go to Nurnberg and then Bamberg on Sunday? I don't want to twist us into a pretzel to use the ticket for free on Sunday, but we had initially thought Bamberg would be our second town anyway.
3) I like very much the day trip to Oberammergau/Ettal/Linderhof. Do you recommend any specific trains or buses? Is a tour reasonable from Munich?
4) Is it easier to day trip from Munich and head to Salzburg that evening or the next morning than leaving from the above mentioned day trip region?

Thanks again!

1) I'm unsure about United; LH does, and since you've a LH booking code anyway I'd try it on their website. If everything fails you still can avoid the high long distance train prices by travelling on a so-called "Quer-durchs-Land" ticket, which is valid on regional trains only (€52). Your ride will take 30 to 60 min longer. Check connections at wwww.bahn.com. In order to compare prices of long distance and regional trains repeat your search after selecting "local traffic only"; sometimes the difference is not that much.

2) Yes, you can use a TagesticketPlus bought at the Rothenburg station on saturday for your sunday trip to Bamberg. The trip from Rothenburg to Nürnberg ist approx 1:15 (two easy transfers in Steinach and Ansbach) and assuming that you arrive in the afternoon, you could follow this itinerary (3rd posting) to see the historical town in the late afternoon; then visit the nazi rally grounds next morning (I'd concentrate on Hitler's unfinished congress hall and the informative documentation inside; the rest ist not worth your precious time) and spend the rest of the day in Bamberg (45 min by RE, 60 min by S-Bahn).

3) There are trains from Munich to Oberammergau and from there buses to Ettal. Public transport from either Ettal or Oberammergau to Linderhof and back is not that frequent and needs some planning (www.bahn.com again). It might save time to use a taxi for one leg and to use the bus for the other. Alternativly, during the exhibition "Mythos Bavaria" from 3rd of May till end of November you can rent an E-bike at the exibition desk (in the abbey) and cycle the (flat) route to Linderhof.

4) You would have to go back to Munich anyway. However, if you go to Oberammergau on a day ticket (»Bayern ticket«, €31 for two) you could proceed on the same ticket from Munich to Salzburg in the evening. The entire trip Oberammergau - Salzburg would take just under 4 hours (e.g., Oberammergau dep. 18:40 or 19:38, Salzburg arr. 22:37 or 23:37, transfer time in Munich approx 20 min.).

Wow, thanks so much. I am very excited about this information -- transportation is so tricky. I have looked at the train sites and seem to have trouble! Great plan to use the ticket twice to Salzburg. And I love the info about Nuremburg symphony. I will take this all in and try to figure it out.

Just come back with any question re trains. There are quite a few poeple here who are very knowledgeable about the German train system, including Sam, Lee, and Russ, to name just a few.

Do a google search on Wurzburg and see if you really want to skip it. The Prince Bishop's Residence is really something to see, as is the small church on one end of the building. St. Kilians Dom is also quite a place as is the market square.

You can get a direct train there, spend the day, stay over night, spend part of the next morning, and take a local train (with one easy peasy connection) to Rothenburg the next day.

Just my thoughts, but then I lived there so maybe I'm biased.

I am sure Wurzburg is beautiful and interesting. I will put that in the hopper, thank you.
