Hi! I will be traveling by car from Heidelburg to Rothenburg in October. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for towns/places to visit along the way? Thank you!

My old "Strassen und Reisen" German road atlas shows the following towns marked in the red rectangle as "scenic towns". Neckar Gemuend, Eberbach, Mosbach, Bad Mergentheim. That is assuming you are not going by way of the Autobahn.

Drive up the Neckar River Valley from Heidelberg. At a minimum, stop at Dilsberg, Hirschhorn and Bad Wimpfen. You may even find Rothenburg a little redundant after visiting these towns (minus all the trinket shops that one finds in Rothenburg).

I took Tom's advice for our trip a couple of years ago - driving from Heidelberg along the Neckar and seeing his recommended spots - it was great! We ended up staying for a couple of nights in Bad Wimpfen while visiting friends from the 'alte tage' in Heilbronn - Bad Wimpfen was a wonderful little town with some very Rothenburg like characteristics. The 'Red Tower' and the 'Blue Tower' spring to mind - and we were lucky there - the Sunday we arrived they had some sort of re-enactment going on.
We continued on to visit (and enjoyed) Rothenburg though - including the trinket shops - especially Käthe Wohlfahrt :-)
