Will be in Germany mid-May 2016.
We will be picking up rental car in Heidelberg- leaving in am I assume 9/9:30 and driving to Rothenburg odT -would like to arrive there by 4/5 pm.

Looking for suggestions on which route to take and sights/towns to see along the way.

For at least the first portion of the trip, drive up the scenic Neckar river valley. It's a steep-walled valley similar to the more well-known Middle Rhine and Mosel valleys. Lots of attractive towns, castles and vineyards. At a minimum, stop in Bad Wimpfen, and if time allows, the walled castle town of Dilsberg.

If you were driving from Heidelberg to Bamberg would you recommend same route or something different?

Hi Christina,

if you take the fastest Route straight to Rothenburg you could visit Speyer and its Roman Cathedral for example ( about 1000 years old). Schwäbisch Hall would be worth a visit too. Its a nice Medieval town and has a open air museum with about 60 restored buildings depicting how life has been lived here since the Middle Ages. Its called Freilandmuseum Hohenlohe.

And like tom said: if you are not in a hurry, take the scenic roads between towns and along the river and avoid the autobahn.

Heidelberg to Bamberg is quite a bit of a longer drive, but I think you can still start off on the Neckar River. Schwäbish Hall, although worth a visit, is now out of your way, though. You could consider a stop-off in Würbzburg, though, if you have time.

OK- decided to just drive to Rothenburg as planned. We will do Bamberg as a day trip from there.
Looking forward to driving along the Neckar, stopping in Bad Wimpfen, Schwabishch Hall, etc- I think that will fill our day very nicely.

MarcWithaC- thank you for recommendation for the open air museum I had not come across that one in my research and we do want to visit one- will post a question about open air museums separately.
